Read More	SCHUPBACH, BERTHA GERTRUDE—Bertha Gertrude Schupbach, was born on October 23, 1883, in Chelsea township, Fillmore county. She was the eldest daughter of Robert E. and Ora Josephine Cook Hastings. They were among the first to homestead in this area of Nebraska. She died at Fairview Manor, Fairmont, on February 27, 1988, at the age of 104 years, 4 months and 4 days. She received her early education in rural elementary school in Chelsea township. She was united in marriage to Erwin O. Schupbach on February 24, 1904, at the family home and immediately moved to their farm in Chelsea township, where they resided nearly 25 years with the exception of six years, which were spent on a homestead near Chugwater, Wy. To this union five children were born. Bertha was converted in her early years, and later united with the Methodist Church at Chugwater, Wy., where she was a devoted member and ardent worker. After moving back to Nebraska, she transferred her letter to the Chelsea United Brethren Church where she at all times took an active part in the Lord’s work, particularly with music. She was left a widow at an early age, but stayed on the farm until her two youngest children finished their high school education. This was a real challenge, especially during the Depression years, but she kept her faith and determination to carry on. Bertha moved to California in 1936 and worked for some time in the shipyards and later did practical nursing for several more years in the Berkeley area. After retiring, she purchased a home in Pacific Grove, near her son, Clifford. When she was no longer able to maintain her own home, she returned to Nebraska in July of 1973, and entered Fairview Manor at Fairmont, where she resided until her death. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three sons, one daughter, four sisters, two brothers, a son-in-law, granddaughter and a grandson. She is survived by one daughter, Eunice Voigtlander of Geneva, two daughters-in-law of California; five grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews and a host of friends. Bertha was a loving devoted mother and grandmother. She especially enjoyed her home in California where family and friends were always welcome. In her retirement she enjoyed piecing and she quilted many quilts for many of her grandchildren. Dominant in her life was her faith in God, which made her a tireless worker for Him, when she had strength. She was patient in sacrifice and service, no matter how heavy the burden. Her faith did not waver, but she walked quietly through all her trials. At the time of her death, Mrs. Schupbach had the honor of being the oldest woman in Fillmore county. Funeral services were conducted from the Farmer and Son Funeral Home in Geneva on Wednesday, March 2, with the Rev. Charles G. Schepel officiating. The vocal music selection was “In the Garden.” Those serving as pallbearers were George Engle, Ralph Gibson, Rex E. Heironymus, Tom Novak, George Nunns, and Charles H. Miller.
