ALBERT PROBST PASSES ON AFTER MANY MONTHS' ILLNESS-VICTIM OF HOMER FLOOD--NEVER RECOVERED FROM THE EFFECTS OF SHOCK--DIED AT ALTON JANUARY 27TH Mrs. Albert Probst of Homer, Nebraska passed away on January 27th at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. B. Kettler, of Alton after many months suffering from the effects of brain tumor. Mrs. Probst had been helpless from paralysis since her return from the hospital at Rochester in September. Her devoted husband and family have spared no effort nor care to cease her suffering and prolong her life, but for the past two weeks she has been practically unconscious and passed away Friday afternoon at 3:45 o’clock. She was a fine young woman, devoted to her husband and six year old son, cheerful and uncomplaining during her long suffering. Besides her husband and son, Orville, she leaves parents and ten brothers and sisters. The latter are Miss Margaret Kettler, Alton, Alexius, St. Louis; Leo, Le Mars; Mrs. Joe Fath, Lismore, Minnesota; Frank of Homer, Nebraska; Otto, Mrs. Ed Schneider, Mrs. J.V. Monsel, Oswald, and Saverna all of Alton. Funeral services were held at St. Mary’s Church Monday morning. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery, Alton. Many beautiful flowers and wreaths were received from friends at Alton, Homer and other places. Bertha Kettler Probst was born on August 15th, 1888 at Cottonville, Iowa, and came with her parents, brothers and sisters to Alton when she was thirteen years old. On May 2nd, 1911, she was married to Albert Probst of Alton. Six years passed and they moved to Homer, Nebraska where Mr. Probst engaged in the landscape business. In 1920 came the Homer Flood, when the river went on a rampage and flooded nearly the whole town. The Probst home was in the path of the flood and although the little five year old was carried to safety, Mr. and Mrs. Probst were caught by the water and from two in the afternoon to seven that night stood shoulder deep water, forced to watch their furniture wash away, part of their house floated off, while they cling to what support they could find, not knowing what moment might be their last and help finally came and they were brought to safety. Both suffered from the effects of the shock and although Mrs. Probst was a strong well built woman, rosy cheeked, she was never really well from that time. The following May on Memorial Day she had a slight stroke of paralysis from which she never fully recovered. In September she was taken to Rochester where the cause of her illness was a pronounced brain tumor and an operation was performed to relieve the pressure. The tumor could not be removed, however on September 16th she was brought to Alton where for months of patient sufferer, she passed away.
