Joseph was born September 8, 1847 in Westphalan, Germany, the oldest of seven children. His parents, Joseph and Elizabeth Book Von Tersch, brought their family to America in the 1870s and lived about four miles northwest of Harlan. Frank's mother, Catherine Bauer, was born November 26, 1865 in Munich, Germany, the oldest of five children. Her parents, Joseph and Ursula DeRolla Bauer, also came as a family to Iowa. Joseph was born September 8, 1847 in Westphalan, Germany, the oldest of seven children. His parents, Joseph and Elizabeth Book Von Tersch, brought their family to America in the 1870s and lived about four miles northwest of Harlan. Frank's mother, Catherine Bauer, was born November 26, 1865 in Munich, Germany, the oldest of five children. Her parents, Joseph and Ursula DeRolla Bauer, also came as a family to Iowa. Frank had 11 brothers and sisters: Elizabeth Maddex, Joseph, Karl, Theresa Anastasi, Catherine Coenen, Alex, Alfred, Agnes Muldoon, Blanche Schaben, Frances McDonald and Paul. Frank attended school in Harlan before coming to Defiance as a young man. He worked as a rural mail carrier before he started to farm near Defiance. On May 16, 1922, Frank married Bertha Blum in St. Peter's Church, Defiance. Bertha was born March 5, 1902 at Panama, the daughter of John J. and Mary Schwarte Blum. Bertha's mother died two weeks after her birth, also leaving a two~year~old son, Aloysius. John Blum later married Mary Bier; they had 12 children: Leonard, Martin, Cecelia, Josephine and Leo, born while they lived in Panama; Marie, Lawrence, Cletus, Genevieve, Agnes (Peggy), Jeanette and Dorothy, born at Defiance. Bertha attended school in Panama until the family moved to a farm one~fourth miles south of Defiance. Bertha's father, John J. Blum, born February 27, 1878 at Westphalia, was the youngest of the seven children of Joseph and Katherine Kaufman Blum. Bertha's mother, Mary, was born March 12, 1873, daughter of Herman and Magdelene Nolles Schwarte, who were among the first settlers of Westphalia. Frank and Bertha had 11 children, eight born on a farm southeast of Defiance and the other three in Defiance. On July 3, 1938, they opened the HiWay Tavern, formerly the Christian Church, and at present called Tobe's Place. In 1946 he sold the tavern to son~in~law, Al Schechinger. Their children: Mildred, born March 25, 1923, married Al Schechinger at Defiance, six children: Robert, Jolene, David, James, Mark and Lee. They have 15 grandchildren, are retired and live in Harlan. Robert, born September 11, 1924, married Elizabeth McKie in Washington, D.C., six children: Joseph, Michael, Melanie, Martin, Eric and Robert, and one grandchild. Robert served in the U.S. Marine Corps on Marshall Island in World War II. He worked with the F.B.I., is retired and living in New Jersey. Joyce, born July 17, 1926, married Marvin Will in Defiance, four children: Rebecca, Betty, Scott and Douglas, and seven grandchildren. Joyce died June 5, 1965. Eugene (Tunny), born May 17, 1928, married Verta Mae Barton, nine children: Larry, Sharon, Joan, John, Dale, Paul, Mary, Gene and Teresa and ten grandchildren. Eugene served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He died September 16, 1977; he was Crawford County A.S.C. manager. Verta Mae still lives on the family farm located between Defiance and Denison. Elizabeth (Betty) was born March 9, 1930. She joined the order of St. Benedict, Atchison, Kansas in 1947. A new mother house was established in California and she became one of the founding Nuns. She now teaches at St. Lucy's High School at Glendora, California. Marie, born June 12, 1932, died at birth. Darlene, born November 25, 1934, married Leo Rau, six children: Kathleen, Jacqueline, Janet, Laura, John and Kevin, and one grandchild. Yvonne (Bonnie), born December 10, 1936, married James Maguire, six children: Donald, Joann, Ray, Steve, Kenny and Jeanne, and one grandchild. Bonnie and Jim live in Humphrey, Nebraska where they have an agriculture generator business. Dean, born November 6, 1939, married Maxine Kenkel in Earling, five children: Dean C., Tom, Valerie, Brenda and Angela. Dean and Maxine own and operate the Denison Meat Processing Plant in Denison. Carol, born January 10, 1942, married Donald Kearns in Defiance, four children: Robin, Patricia, Dorinda and Joseph, and live in Lawrence, Kansas. Maxine (Micky), born September 5, 1945, married Gene Sievertsen in Defiance. Micky died February 9, 1965 in a car accident just five weeks after she was married. Gene died in a car accident in 1966. All ten children graduated from St. Paul's High School. Through the years Frank served the community as volunteer fireman, fire chief, town council member and he was township assessor for 20 years. After retirement Frank worked as a part~time carpenter. Bertha died March 29, 1963 at Defiance. She was active in St. Peter's Church affairs through the years. Frank married Mayme Kobold Blum in February 1965. Frank died August 25, 1978.
