Mrs. Hollenbeck was born in Plevna on Oct. 13, 1913, the daughter of John Thomas and Minnie Pearl (Applegate) Staggs. Read More	SHELBY COUNT HERALD, Shelbyville, Missouri, Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2004 BERTHA JANE HOLLENBECK Bertha Jane Hollenbeck, 90 of Shelbyville, died Monday, Feb. 2, 2004 at Salt River Nursing Home in Shelbina. Mrs. Hollenbeck was born in Plevna on Oct. 13, 1913, the daughter of John Thomas and Minnie Pearl (Applegate) Staggs. She married her high school sweetheart, Alvan Warren Hollenbeck on Nov. 13, 1932 in Shelbyville. He preceded her in death. Survivors include three children, Marian Jane March of Columbia, Alvan Vaughn Hollenbeck of Buena Vista, Colorado, and Ruth Elaine Ralls of Shelbyville; 10 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Charles Ellis Staggs, Leander Vaughn Staggs, and Roy Adrian Staggs; two sisters, Ruth Mae Madsen and Lucy Ethel Dingle. Mrs. Hollenbeck was a member of the Shelbyville Christian Church where she sang in the choir, played the piano, organ and chimes, and taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School and Youth Groups. She was devoted to missions. She and her husband gave generously of their time and resources to Central Christian College of the Bible and Shiloh Christian Children's Ranch. Mr. & Mrs. Hollenbeck lived their entire married lives on the Hollenbeck farm northwest of Shelbyville. Mrs. Hollenbeck graduated from Shelbyville High School in 1931 as class valedictorian. After graduation she taught for one year at the Robison school, northwest of Shelbyville. She enjoyed attending meetings and conferences of the Rural Electric Association when her husband was on the board. When she was physically able, Mrs. Hollenbeck played the piano during Bible Study and enjoyed participating in the activities and nursing home games. Bingo was a favorite entertainment. Funeral services will be Thursday, Feb. 5 at the Shelbyville Christian Church. Burial will in Shelby Memorial Cemetery in Shelbyville. (November 13, 1932) BERTHA JANE STAGGS AND ALVAN HOLLENBECK WED Miss Bertha Jane Staggs and Alvan Hollenbeck were united in marriage at the home of the bride's parents at 5:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon, the Rev. F. M. Branic, an uncle of the bride, officiating. The ceremony took place before an altar of chrysanthemums. Miss Elma Hollenbeck and Lawrence Bennett were the attendants. The wedding march was played by Miss Ethel Staggs, and Mrs. Lee Staggs sang a solo, "Always." Only the immediate relatives were present. Immediately following the ceremony a wedding dinner was served. The couple will make their home on a farm northwest of town [Shelbyville, MO]. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Staggs of northeast of town. She graduated from the Shelbyville High School in the class of 1930 and last year taught at the Robison School northwest of town. Mr. Hollenbeck is the son of Mr. and Mrs. George Hollenbeck of northwest of town. He is also a graduate of the Shelbyville High School in the class of 1930, and last year he attended Culver-Stockton College at Canton, where he was a member of the Alpha Lambda Tau Fraternity. Both the bride and bridegroom are among the most popular of the younger group in this community and they have many friends here with whom the Herald [Shelby County Herald] joins in wishing them happiness and success.
