Read More	SHELBY COUNTY HERALD, Shelbyville, Missouri, Wednesday, Feb. 7, 1979 ALVAN HOLLENBECK Alvan Warren Hollenbeck, 66 of near Shelbyville, died Tuesday, Feb. 6, at a hospital in Kirksville, after suffering a heart attack while at the hospital visiting his wife, who is a patient. Mr. Hollenbeck was born Dec. 30, 1912 to George and Ruby Hollenbeck, near Shelbyville. He graduated from Shelbyville High School and attended one semester at Culver Stockton College in Canton. On Nov. 13, 1932 he married Bertha Jane Staggs. Three children were born to this union, two daughters, Marian March of Columbia, Missouri, and Ruth Ralls of Shelbyville; and one son, Vaughn of Beuna Vista, Colorado. Mr. Hollenbeck was a lifelong resident of the Robison community northwest of Shelbyville and lived on the farm purchased by his great-grandfather in 1874. He was a member of the Shelbyville Christian Church where he served as an elder for many years. He served on the board of directors for the Macon Electric Cooperative for over 20 years and was also a board member on the Northeast Power Cooperative in Palmyra. He was also on the board of directors for the Shiloh Christian Children's Ranch near Clarence. He was an ardent supporter of Central Christian College of the Bible in Moberly where two of his children and one granddaughter attended. He is survived by his wife, Bertha Jane; one sister, Mrs. Elma Bennett; one son; two daughters; ten grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, cousins, and numerous friends. Funeral services will be held Friday at the Shelbyville Christian Church. Burial will be in the Shelby Memorial Cemetery. RUBY HOLLENBECK'S ACCOUNT OF ALVAN HOLLENBEC'S BIRTH: Alvan was born December 30, 1912, at 12:05 o'clock, Monday a.m., weighed 9 pounds, measured 21 1/2 inches. His great-aunt Nettie McMaster & Mrs. Jennie Feely & Dr. C. E. Salyer were present at his arrival. The first week he gained 1 pound. The 2nd week just held his own. At 3 weeks, he weighed 10 1/2 pounds, at 4 weeks 11 pounds, at 5 weeks, 12 pounds, at 6 weeks, 13 pounds, at 7 weeks, 14 pounds, and was 24 1/2 inches long. At 8 weeks, he weighed 14 1/2 pounds. He began laughing and noticing us when 4 weeks old. His first tooth came when he was 5 1/2 months old. Began walking two days before 1 year-old. Began saying a few words when about 13 months. (November 13, 1932) BERTHA JANE STAGGS AND ALVAN HOLLENBECK WED Miss Bertha Jane Staggs and Alvan Hollenbeck were united in marriage at the home of the bride's parents at 5:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon, the Rev. F. M. Branic, an uncle of the bride, officiating. The ceremony took place before an altar of chrysanthemums. Miss Elma Hollenbeck and Lawrence Bennett were the attendants. The wedding march was played by Miss Ethel Staggs, and Mrs. Lee Staggs sang a solo, "Always." Only the immediate relatives were present. Immediately following the ceremony a wedding dinner was served. The couple will make their home on a farm northwest of town [Shelbyville, MO]. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Staggs of northeast of town. She graduated from the Shelbyville High School in the class of 1930 and last year taught at the Robison School northwest of town. Mr. Hollenbeck is the son of Mr. and Mrs. George Hollenbeck of northwest of town. He is also a graduate of the Shelbyville High School in the class of 1930, and last year he attended Culver-Stockton College at Canton, where he was a member of the Alpha Lambda Tau Fraternity. Both the bride and bridegroom are among the most popular of the younger group in this community and they have many friends here with whom the Herald [Shelby County Herald] joins in wishing them happiness and success.
