There will be a graveside service on Saturday, August 29, at 1:30pm, at the Nassau Township Cemetery near Alton. The Rev. Dr. Perry De Groot will officiate. Bertha Johanna was born on February 5, 1922, in rural Alton, the daughter of Johan and Johanna (Leenhouts) Aberson. She was raised on a farm south of Alton, where she attended country school through the eighth grade. Bertha worked as a telephone operator before marriage. Her dream of a high school diploma was finally realized when she earned her GED in 1977. On February 5, 1948, she married Norman Eason at the Alton Reformed Church. They farmed in the Plymouth and Sioux County area where Bertha was an active participant in the operation. She was an avid horticulturist which resulted in bountiful gardens. Her produce was always shared. Other hobbies were sewing, cooking and reading. After retiring in Alton, the couple enjoyed fifteen seasons as winter Texans at the Mission Bell Resort. While there, they volunteered at Children's Haven in Renosa, Mexico. The couple enjoyed their 500-card club which played for many years. Bertha and Norm were a team united over 67 years until death parted them in May of 2015. In March of 2016 Bertha became a resident of the Landsmeer Ridge Independent living community in Orange City. She enjoyed their activities and playing pinochle. She then became a resident of the Prairie Ridge Care Center in Orange City on August 13 of this year. She was an active member of the Alton Reformed Church, where she was involved in Women's ministries on the local and classis level, sang in the choir, and taught Sunday School for 25 years, Catechism and Bible School. As a member of the Floyd Post American Legion Auxiliary, Bertha supported the Veterans. She was a 4-H leader for seven years, served on the County 4-H Committee, was named an honorary 4-H member, and judged local achievement shows. The Sioux City Journal honored her in 1978 as the Sioux County Homemaker of the year. She also served on the Nassau Township election board, for many years as chairman. Lovingly called "Aunt B" by her nieces & nephews, Bertha was known for her baking. Especially appreciated, were the pecan rolls and angel food cakes all made from scratch. They also knew that dinner was served at noon sharp and when offered food an answer of "I don't care" left them empty-handed. Survivors include two daughters, Mary Eason, of Orange City, and Joyce & her husband the Rev. Dr. Perry De Groot, of Spencer; four granddaughters, Rebecca (Andy) Anderson, Rachel (Travis) Popken, Sara (Curt) Sparks, and Susan De Groot; ten great-grandchildren; a brother, Peter Aberson, of Hull; and a sister-in-law, Betty Eason, of Orange City. In addition to her husband, parents, and step mother, she was preceded in death by a sister, Dena (David) Palsma; brother, Anthony (Ethel) Aberson; a sister-in-law, Geri Aberson; a step-sister, Gertrude (John) Visser; and Norm's siblings, George and Wayne Eason and Mildred Moorhead.
