From the Skidmore News, February 22, 1923, page 1: "Bertha Weller Barrett Skidmore and community was again saddened when word came that Mrs. Fred M. Barrett had answered the final summons to her Heavenly home about 3:30 o'clock Monday afternoon. Mrs. Barrett had been ill only a few days and everything was done that human hands could do to prolong her life. She was well known and held in high esteem by all, and her passing away will be a great loss to the community. Her husband, children and relatives have the deepest sympathy of the entire community. Bertha Lea Weller, daughter of Phillip J. and Sarah S. Weller, was born near Maitland, Mo., November 19, 1892, and died at her home west of Skidmore, February 19, 1923, aged 30 years and three months. Her early life was spent on the farm where she was born, moving to Maitland in the fall of 1912. After finishing the rural school, she entered the Maitland high school from which she graduated in 1911; later spending some time in the Maryville State Normal, preparing herself to teach, after which she taught two years at the Goodwill school, where her oldest boy, Ernest is now a pupil. She was married to Fred M. Barrett January 1, 1916, and to this union were born two sons, Ernest Frederick and Philip Weller and a daughter, Frieda Bertha Margaret. The daughter being four days old. Mrs. Barrett was a devoted wife and mother, described by the wise man of old, 'The heart of her husband trusteth in her.' 'Her children rise up and call her blessed.' She united with the Christian church in Maitland in her early life and after her marriage transferred her membership to the Methodist church at Burr Oak. She was a faithful worker in the Sunday School and the various church activities; a good neighbor, a loving daughter, sister, wife and mother. Funeral services were held at the Burr Oak church yesterday afternoon. Rev. D. G. MacDougal had charge of the services, assisted by Rev. J. J. Cokely. After the services at the church her body was laid to rest in the Burr Oak cemetery." From the January 6, 1916 Skidmore News, page 1: "A Double Wedding. Promptly at high noon, Saturday, January 1st, 1916, a double wedding was witnessed, at the home of the brides in Maitland, by relatives of the brides and grooms. The contracting parties were Miss Bertha L. Weller and Mr. Frederick M. Barrett, Miss Goldie Weller and Mr. George Link. Promptly at the appointed time, to the wedding march played by Miss Kate Weller, sister of the brides, the couples marched into the room, decorated for the occasion, and took their places in front of two ministers, Rev. Reuben Barrett of Skidmore and Rev. Harlan of Graham, who spoke the words that united the lives of these estimable young people. The brides were charmingly dressed in copenhagen silk trimmed in white fur. After the ceremony the guests were invited into the dining room where a sumptuous wedding feast was served. Fred M. Barrett is the youngest son of Rev. and Mrs. Reubin Barrett of Skidmore, a Christian young man of many fine qualities and is considered as one of the coming young farmers of the county, who will make his mark as a worthy son of honorable parents. The brides' parents are both dead and the three sisters have been living at home in Maitland since the death of the mother, about a year ago. Mrs. Barrett has been a successful school teacher the past few years, is a young lady of many graces of mind and person, who is capable of filling the home she will adorn with happiness and will prove to be truly a helpmate and companion by the husband she has chosen to honor with her hand. Mr. and Mrs. Barrett left on the afternoon train for Kirksville, Mo., where they will visit for a short time with Mr. and Mrs. Manville Carothers, a sister of Mr. Barrett. They will be at home after January 15, on the farm four miles west of Skidmore. Mr. and Mrs. Link will reside on a farm near Maitland."
