He was nicknamed Jake by his Uncle Floyd Barrett. He had one brother, Philip, and one sister, Frieda. His mother died in Feb, 1923, after the birth of his sister. He attended grade school at Goodwill and he graduated from Skidmore High School. He attended NEMSC at Kirksville one year, then worked in a paper mill in Camas, Washington for about one year. When he returned home, he helped his father on the farm. In 1940, he married Vernal Elizabeth Clardy. They had five children. Ernest and Vernal with their family left the farm in the early 50's moving to Maitland where he worked as a mechanic at the Christian Implement Co for a short time, he then bought into the Allis Chalmers Implement Co and opened up a business in Fairfax, moving his family there. In 1959, he sold out and moved backed to Skidmore where he opened up a machinery repair. He was very conscious about keeping the farmers' machinery in running order. He belonged to the Masonic Lodge and Eastern Star. He was an avid reader, and liked to hunt and fish. One June 28, 1967, he had a fatal heart attack.
