Description	:	Bertha Scheffler Settje was the daughter of an East Prussian family that had immigrated to the Ukraine before Bertha's birth. Bertha's father Carl, son of Friedrich Scheffler and Caroline Krause, was born in Albrechtsdorf, East Prussia in 1833. (East Prussia became part of Poland in 1945. Albrechtsdorf, East Prussia is now Wojciechy, Poland.) In East Prussia in 1855, Carl Scheffler married Justine Augusta Ernestina Niemann, daughter of Ernest Niemann; Justine had been born in 1835. Albrechtsdorf, East Prussia is now Wojciechy, Poland.) In East Prussia in 1855, Carl Scheffler married Justine Augusta Ernestina Niemann, daughter of Ernest Niemann; Justine had been born in 1835. Together, Carl and Justine had at least four daughters (Johanna, Wilhelmine, Bertha, and Justina Augusta) and four sons (Hermann, Ferdinand, Gustav, and Carl). Carl and Justine Scheffler's fifth child, Bertha, was their third daughter. (Carl Scheffler and Ernest Niemann both died in Colorado around 1890. Justine Scheffler died in Platte County, Nebraska in 1907.) The Schefflers immigrated from East Prussia to the Ukraine in either 1865 or 1866; Ukraine at that time was a part of Russia. Bertha was born on June 16, 1866 in Gnadenthal, Vohlynia, Ukraine, Russia. The family immigrated again in 1886, leaving Hamburg aboard the S.S. Ethiopia on September 4 and arriving in the United States on September 19. Bertha married John Settje on June 21, 1887 in Leigh, Nebraska. The bride and the groom both lived in Leigh, Nebraska at the time of their wedding. The Settjes lived for a time in Akron, Colorado, but they resettled in Platte County, Nebraska where they farmed for most of the remainder of John Settje's life. They had six sons and two daughters. Two of John and Bertha's sons married two daughters from the nearby Heinrich and Jante Meyer family; John and Bertha's two daughters married Heinrich and Jante Meyer's two sons. The children of these four Settje-Meyer unions, therefore, all had the same four grandparents, and they often spoke of their "double cousins." Bertha Scheffler Settje's husband died in 1924. She remained a widow for 24 years, dying at age 81 on May 17, 1948. Rev. John Boettchers presided at her funeral in the Baptist church in Creston, Nebraska. Story from a Family History: Bertha Scheffler Settje's daughter Meta Settje Meyer wrote a family history which included the following story of the marriage of her father and mother along with their life together: The sequence of this story is unknown but it was during the revolution. The three older children, John F. Settje, Lena, and Sophia came to America. The parents were assassinated either before or right after leaving 3 yr. old Gerhard who was kept by friends or relatives. When Gerhard was 13 yrs old the three had him smuggled over on a ship and brought to them in America. John F. came to America as a young man to Leigh, Nebraska where he was employed by the Rabela Family. Then in 1887 he married Bertha Scheffler. About a year later they moved to Akron, Colorado, where they lived seven years then moved back to Nebraska and settled on a farm 3 1/2 miles northeast of Creston, Nebraska where they farmed until 1919 when they retired and moved to Creston, Nebraska. John F. died Oct 1, 1924. Bertha died May 15, 1947. Both buried in Creston Cemetery.
