Description	:	When John Frederick Settje was born on April 28, 1858, in Rostruperfeld, Germany, his father, Johann Friedrich Gerhard Settje, was 36 and his mother, Anna Catherine Bruns Settje, was 26. John's father was a watchman born in 1821 who died in 1878. Anna Bruns, born in 1831, married Johann Settje on May 13, 1853. John's father was a watchman born in 1821 who died in 1878. Anna Bruns, born in 1831, married Johann Settje on May 13, 1853. Together, they had at least four boys (Hermann [1856-?], Johann Friedrich [1858-1924], Gerhard [1866-1947], and Johann Dietrich [1870-?]) and two girls (Sophia [1860–1914] and Lena [1863–1941]). John Settje's parents were born, lived, and died in Germany. He married Bertha Scheffler on June 21, 1887, at the Fred Rabeler farm home in Leigh, Nebraska. The bride and the groom both lived in Leigh, Nebraska at the time of their wedding. They had eight children in 16 years. John Settje died on October 1, 1924, in Creston, Nebraska, at the age of 66, and was buried there. The Rev. F.W. Socolofski presided at his funeral at the Baptist church in Creston, where he was one of the original members. Story from a Family History: John Settje's daughter Meta Settje Meyer wrote a family history which included the following story of the arrival her father John, her aunts Sophia and Lena, and her uncle Gerhardt in the United States: The sequence of this story is unknown but it was during the revolution. The three older children, John F. Settje, Lena, and Sophia came to America. The parents were assassinated either before or right after leaving 3 yr. old Gerhard who was kept by friends or relatives. When Gerhard was 13 yrs old the three had him smuggled over on a ship and brought to them in America. John F. came to America as a young man to Leigh, Nebraska where he was employed by the Rabela Family. Then in 1887 he married Bertha Scheffler. About a year later they moved to Akron, Colorado, where they lived seven years then moved back to Nebraska and settled on a farm 3 1/2 miles northeast of Creston, Nebraska where they farmed until 1919 when they retired and moved to Creston, Nebraska. John F. died Oct 1, 1924. Bertha died May 15, 1947. Both buried in Creston Cemetery. Note: John's sister Sophia Settje Peper died in Portland, Oregon in 1914. His sister Lena Settje Muhle died in Columbus, Nebraska in 1941. His brother Gerhardt died in Portland, Oregon in 1947.
