Description	:	Bertha (Sexauer) Balthaser passed away on Sunday, February 8, 2009. She was born in Lancaster, Ohio on September 16, 1922. She attended South Elementary School and graduated from Lancaster High School in 1940 and School Colors were Purple and Gold. She attended Capital University in Bexley, Ohio and graduated in 1943 with a degree in elementary education. She was born in Lancaster, Ohio on September 16, 1922. She attended South Elementary School and graduated from Lancaster High School in 1940 and School Colors were Purple and Gold. She attended Capital University in Bexley, Ohio and graduated in 1943 with a degree in elementary education. Bertha was hired by Berne Union Schools, in Sugar Grove, Ohio, where she taught third grade for four years. She was married June 7, 1947 to David V. Balthaser of Lancaster, Ohio. She and David moved to Columbus, Ohio where she was hired by the Columbus School System to teach second grade at Fair Avenue Elementary School. After two years, she returned to Lancaster, Ohio, where she was a substitute teacher for a number of years. Bertha was appointed to the Child Welfare Board, which supervised the operation of the Forest Rose School for the developmentally-disabled and was then appointed to the first Board 169 for the mentally retarded. She also served on the United Cerebral Palsy Board. Bertha was a lifelong member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, where she served as a Sunday school teacher, was a leader in the women's organizations and sang in the church choir. She was the nursery department teacher and Sunday School superintendent for many years, the first president of the Women of the Church and active in the Ruth Circle. She served as the secretary for the Southern Conference of Ohio of Lutheran church women. She also was a member of the Beta Circle OCCL and Fairfield Heritage Asociation. She served as a volunteer at the Fairfield District Library and was a docent at the Sherman House. She is survived by one son, John of Heath, Ohio; one daughter, Rebecca (David) McBride of Campbell California; and three granddaughters, Kathleen, Amanda and Maria McBride all of Campbell, California. Bertha was preceded in death by her parents, husband David in April 2006. He was a lifelong Lancaster resident and accountant. She also preceded in death by her parents, Christian Sexauer (former mayor of Lancaster, Ohio), Bertha Sexauer and Minnie Sexauer; three brothers, Paul, Fred and Ralph Sexauer; and one sister, Dorothy. whom she married June 7,1947, David V. Balthaser who died in April, 2006; three brothers, Paul Sexauer, Fred Sezauer. Services will take place at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Lancaster, Ohio and will be officiated by the Rev. Emil Klatt III. Burial will follow at the Maple Grove Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Frank E. Smith Funeral Home, and one hour prior to the service at the church.
