The funeral mass and celebration of Bertha's life will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 22, at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Strasburg, with the Rev. Paul Eberle officiating, followed by burial in the Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, where a rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue on Sunday from noon to 3 p.m. at Eastgate Funeral Service and Sunday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church where a rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Bertha was born July 20, 1933, east of Strasburg, the daughter of Anton and Mary (Schumacher) Volk. She attended country school and on Oct. 12, 1953, married the love of her life Victor Deringer, in Strasburg. Following their marriage they moved to Bismarck, where Victor worked at the Mandan Refinery. A year later they moved back to Strasburg where Bertha stayed at home and raised her two daughters. After they were settled in school, she decided to follow her passion for cooking and became a hot lunch cook for St. Ben's Grade School and Emmons Central for many years. She was also an active member of St. Mary's Altar Society and the Ladies Auxiliary. Bertha enjoyed flowers, gardening, embroidery and baking. Her greatest loves were her family and friends, especially her two grandchildren, Vicki and Robert. After Bertha had been diagnosed with cancer, she set a goal of seeing her two grandchildren married. On July 3 and August 21, 2010, she saw each of her grandchildren married. She looked beautiful and had a wonderful time celebrating. Bertha will always be remembered for her big smiles, great sense of humor, and never complaining during her battle with cancer. She is survived by her two daughters, Cindy (Kevin) Schatz and Edna Deringer, both of Bismarck; two grandchildren, Vicki (Brandon) Becker, Fargo, and Robert (Jessie) Schatz, Bismarck, a great-grand dog, Shelby, Fargo, who made her smile and laugh daily; one sister-in-law, Esther Volk, Blue Earth, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Victor; and four brothers, Henry, Pius, Mike and Leo Volk.
