Bertha graduated from Coon Rapids High School in 1918 and continued her education at Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. She taught school for a few years after her graduation. Read More	Coon Rapids Enterprise February 5, 1981 Bertha, daughter of Claborn A. and Ellen Hendricks Yager, was born December 20, 1899, in Viola Township, Audubon County. Bertha graduated from Coon Rapids High School in 1918 and continued her education at Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. She taught school for a few years after her graduation. On May 11, 1924, Bertha was united in marriage with William Karl Keister. Born to this union were three children; Lois, William Karl, and Ruth. The family made their home in this community, where Bertha's husband was associated with the Keister Lumber Company. After her husband's death in 1933, Bertha continued to make Coon Rapids her home, where she became very active in her church and her community. Bertha was a member of the United Methodist Church serving in many church offices, including the building committee. She was a member of the Women's Society of Christian Service. She gave many years of service and leadership to Chapter DW, PEO, having served as president of that organization, and also to Faith Chapter, Order of Eastern Star, having served as Worthy Matron. She was honored as a 50 year member of both organizations. Bertha served two terms on the Coon Rapids School Board and was an active supporter of PTA. She was a member of the Women's Auxiliary of the Gurney Parker Post of the American Legion and was active in the County-wide Legion Organization. For the past seventeen years Bertha has maintained a home in Arizona as well as in Coon Rapids, and has always valued her friends in the Southwest, as well as those in Coon Rapids. Bertha had been hospitalized at Nebraska Methodist Hospital in Omaha for a short time, where she passed away on January 29, 1961, at the age of 81 years, 1 month and 9 days. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Karl, two sisters: Bonita, Mrs. Harold Scott; and Hazel, Mrs. Edward Baker, an infant sister and a brother, Everett, as a youth. She is survived by her three children: Lois, Mrs. Noel Bevins, Woodland Hills, Ca.; William Karl Keister, Council Bluffs and his wife, Roberta; and Ruth, Mrs. Lloyd Ryan, Cedar Falls. Also surviving are nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren, two sisters: Chloe, Mrs. John Horie, Brighton, Co.; and Martha, Mrs. Harold Keister, Coon Rapids, as well as nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends. In memory of Bertha Keister, a memorial fund has been established for her at the United Methodist Church, Coon Rapids, or at Cottey College, Nevada, Mo.
