Beryl Francis Martin, age 100, of Clarksville, Iowa, was born the son of Jerry James and Grace (Tanner) Martin, on November 10, 1907, rural Clarksville, Iowa. He was born and raised in rural Clarksville. He attended school thru the 10th grade at Shell Rock High School, Shell Rock, Iowa. He enjoyed playing baseball in school. Through the years Beryl has lived in Colorado, Oklahoma and Iowa. Between 1931 and 1947 Beryl lived in Waterloo and worked for Gamble Robinson and the Hoxie Fruit Company. He married Virginia Deering and they were later divorced. He also drove bus in the Waterloo and Cedar Falls, Iowa area for many years. On November 10, 1933, Beryl was united in marriage with Mildred Amick in Waterloo, Iowa. They made their home in Clarksville and Beryl proudly opened the Martin Sundries Drug Store in 1947 and continued operating it until 1964. At that time, he then worked for Farm Service for eight years as an operational manager in Clarksville. Mildred passed away on January 28, 1967. Beryl married Olive Bolin at the Unity Church in Clarksville. She later passed away. His last job was driving the Area 7 School Bus and retired at the age of 90. In 1994 Beryl married Katherine Klunder at the Immanuel United Church of Christ in Clarksville. They also lived in Clarksville and she later passed away on December 28, 1998. Beryl went into the Community Nursing Home in Clarksville on November 13, 2006, three days after his 99th birthday. He had been living on his own in the retirement village. Beryl was a member of the Community United Methodist Church in Clarksville, where he had served on the church board a couple of times. He was a 50 year member of the Masonic Order and the I.O.O.F. Beryl served as the Clarksville Mayor twice and three terms on the Clarksville City Council. While serving the city in those duties he was present for the building of the Clarksville Fire Station and later the town library. He loved spending time with his family whenever possible. Beryl enjoyed sports on TV, doing word puzzles and walking. He liked to bake cookies and cakes and did his own cooking until he went into the Nursing Home. Beryl died Wednesday, March 26, 2008, at the Community Nursing Home in Clarksville, Iowa, of natural causes. He was preceded in death by four wives, Virginia, Mildred, Olive and Katherine; one daughter, Carolee Flynn; one son, James D. Martin; a daughter-in-law, Jeraldine Martin; four siblings, a baby, Glenn Martin, Nina Miner and Velma Jones; a step daughter-in-law, Marilyn Bolin; and a step son-in-law, Ronald Miller. Beryl is survived by, a son-in-law, Dewey Flynn of Clarksville, IA; four step-children, four grandchildren; six great grandchildren; ten step-grandchildren; 17 step-great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
