He is now residing on the home place and, with the aid of his brothers, all working harmoniously together, is engaged in grain and stock raising. The Thomasson family has alw2ays been noted for its thrift and public spirit, and the sons are exemplifying the ideals and aims of their parents. "Beryl Verne was educated in the public schools, and being the oldest son in the family, he early began working on the ranch and lifting some of the burden from the shoulders of his elders. When he was fourteen his father died, and that left him the mainstay of the younger members of the family and his mother's able helper and, later, manager. The early lessons he learned have been of great assistance to him and he considers no work too hard to be accomplished, and he has shouldered responsibilities that would have made many an older man hesitate before undertaking them. "There are to be found on the Thomasson Ranch, eight hundred head of cattle and many sheep and hogs. The home place consists of three hundred twenty acres, and there is another farm of two hundred thirty acres that is devoted to their interests, as well as twelve thousand acres of range land in the hills, over which their stock roam and graze. Besides these broad acres, they lease some twenty-three hundred acres fourteen miles from Marysville, and they also pasture stock on the logged-off lands of the Diamond Match Company at Stirling City. The management of these vast interests occupies the entire time and attention of Mr. Thomasson. He is also executor of his mother's estate. She died on October 11, 1917, mourned by all who had ever known her. Mr. Thomasson is a popular, upright citizen, who is every ready to do his duty wherever it may call him. He is ever ready to aid worthy projects for the betterment of his native county and the state." Butte County History, 1918, by George C. Mansfield, pp 768-69 The Chico Enterprise, Saturday, June 19, 1948: "Verne Thomasson Is Taken by Death. Death claimed Beryl Verne Thomasson Friday afternoon after an illness of long duration. He was born February 9, 1830, in Chico. Son of Caroline Richardson Thomasson and N. H. Thomasson who were pioneers of Chico. Beryl was raised here where he became a prominent rancher and stockman. Thomasson took over the management of the N. H. Thomasson estate when he was 18 and continued until his death. He was an active member of the Cattlemen's Association and also belonged to the F.O.E. Lodge No. 218 of Chico. "Survivors include his wife, Blanche Thomasson of Chico, a son, Harold Verne Thomasson of Orland; two sisters, Mrs. W. C. Stevens and Mrs. Effie M. Bruce, both of Chico; one brother, N. H. Thomasson, Jr. and three grandchildren. Funeral arrangements are pending and will be announced later by the Brusie Funeral Home." The Chico Enterprise, Tuesday, June 22, 1948: "Thomasson Funeral is Conducted Here Today. Final rites were held this afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at Brusie Funeral Home for Beryl Verne Thomasson who died last Friday afternoon. Rev. Robert Clark officiated at the services during which Ray Jefferies sang 'Beautiful Isle' 'Empty Saddles' and 'We Will Meet Again,' accompanied at the chapel organ by Mrs. Marion Cook. Entombment followed in the Chico Memorial Mausoleum with the following friends acting as pallbearers: Amos Boness, Hugh Bell, Gus Griffith, Lloyd Stephens, George Peck and Uhl Garner." contributed by Adriana Farley
