Mrs. Bessie Kemper Shook passed away at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Kemper, last Saturday evening about 7:30 o'clock and her funeral was preached at the Presbyterian church on Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock by the Rev. V. O. White. The church was crowded with her friends and the floral offerings were beautiful and numerous, the music was rendered by the Delta Alpha Sunday School class of which she was a member. The body was laid to rest at Maplewood cemetery. Below is the obituary as read by the minister who visited her upon many occasions. Bessie Kemper, youngest child of William and Kate Kemper, was born in Clarence, Mo., April 4, 1885 and died Dec. 12th at 7:45 p. m. Dec. 6th, 1913, she was united in marriage with Clark Shook. About 15 years ago her health failed and since that time she has never been strong and about six months ago she had to give up to her physical weakness and from that time there has been a rapid decline of her health until death came as a welcome relief to her suffering. During her sickness she was patient, hopeful and courageous even in her most intense suffering In spite of all her pain she was unselfish and ever considerate of each attention of her family and every act of kindness on the part of her many friends. Her disposition was such that she won many friends and greatly endeared herself to every one. She was jovial and looked on the bright side of everything and brought many smiles to those she came in contact with by her jovial expressions. One Sunday during the latter part of Bro. Kimbrell's pastorate she made a profession of religion and joined the Methodist church and later when her father made a profession and joined the Presbyterian church she transferred her membership to the Presbyterian church. While a member of that church the attended the Methodist S. S. and worked with our church when there were no services in her own church. During her last illness it was my privilege to visit her and to try to minister to her spiritual comfort. I found her receptive to the word and appreciative when prayer was offered and solicitous about her spiritual interests. During the latter part of her illness she was unable to receive much company but whenever able enjoyed the pastoral visit and wanted me to come when others could not be admitted. She leaves to mourn their loss her husband, her father and mother, one brother, Irwin, who resides in Montana and two sisters, Mrs. Grace Hamrick and Mrs. Ella K. Pritchard.
