She was born May 7, 1930, in Chanute, Kansas, the daughter of Fred Earl and Katherine Louise (Rapp) Bartholomew. She was united in marriage to George Curtis Van Nice, Sept. 1, 1947 in Humboldt, KS. They resided in Humboldt for many years. She later married Walter A. "Buddy" Butler. She was a member of Sunflower #147 Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, the American Legion Auxiliary, Boerstler-May Post #170, Chanute, KS, and was very active in American Legion supporting projects,... Read More	****************************** Published Dec. 11, 2009 - Chanute, KS Bessie Aileen VanNice-Butler, 79, of Gas, Kansas, died at her home Dec. 8, 2009. She was born May 7, 1930, in Chanute, Kansas, the daughter of Fred Earl and Katherine Louise (Rapp) Bartholomew. She was united in marriage to George Curtis Van Nice, Sept. 1, 1947 in Humboldt, KS. They resided in Humboldt for many years. She later married Walter A. "Buddy" Butler. She was a member of Sunflower #147 Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, the American Legion Auxiliary, Boerstler-May Post #170, Chanute, KS, and was very active in American Legion supporting projects, and in the Humboldt school system while her children were young. She was chosen Humboldt's Mother of the Year in 1972. She is survived by six sons, Clifford and wife, Merrily, of Georgetown, TX, John and wife, Christy, Michael and wife Diana, all of Lenexa, KS, Fred and wife, Heidi, of Waterford, WI, Robert, of Gas, KS, and Jesse and wife, Sheila, of Iola, KS; three daughters, Una McElhany and husband, Jerry, of Miami, OK, Jewel Barney and husband, Jerry, of Humboldt, KS, and Deborah Van Nice, of Gas, KS; one sister, Betty (Bartholomew) Scott, of Chanute, KS; 28 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her two husbands, Curtis Van Nice, and Walter A. "Buddy" Butler; two daughters, Dizera Louise Van Nice and Elisa Christine (Van Nice) Anderson; her parents; and numerous brothers and sisters. Service will be Saturday Dec. 12, 2009 at the Penwell-Gabel Gibson Chapel, Chanute, KS. Burial will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Humboldt, Kansas. Memorials in her name may be made to American Legion and may be left with the funeral home. ***************************
