Born in Owen Sound, Ont., she was the daughter of the late Joseph C. and Blanche (Barnes) Dalrymple. Read More	DALRYMPLE, Bessie Elvira 1919-2008, B.A., M.A., Teacher, Guidance Counselor and Community Worker, passed away at home on December 30, 2008, in Stewiacke. Born in Owen Sound, Ont., she was the daughter of the late Joseph C. and Blanche (Barnes) Dalrymple. After graduating from Bridgetown High School, she attended the Provincial Normal College, Acadia University, and the University of Victoria. In her church she was a Sunday School teacher for over 20 years; an Explorer leader for five years; on the Refugee Committee (Vietnam); with the United Church Woman for over 25 years; Hi-C leader for two years, and camp counselor for two years. Bessie had held positions on the executives of the Annapolis and Colchester-East Hants branches of the Canadian Mental Health Association for some 30 years. The Nova Scotia Teachers Union could claim her as an active member for many years. For the Annapolis County Music Festival, she had acted as president and secretary for five years. Due to her interest in Amnesty International, she has been an Urgent Action Writer for over 10 years. In two towns where diseased elm trees have had to be replaced, she had encouraged the planting of trees as memorial gifts; Bessie was the recipient of a Red Cross Blood Donor pin for giving blood more than 25 times. Her awards include the United Church Women Life Membership in 1969 and from C.M.H.A. an award of merit in 1971, and active in issues that were very dear to her, most recently in the Spiritual Seekers Group. She was a member of the United Church of Canada. A dear friend to many. Bessie was predeceased by brothers, Lloyd, and Rev. Whitney Dalrymple. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Ettinger Funeral Home, Shubenacadie. Funeral service 2 p.m. Sunday, January 4, 2009, in St. Andrew's United Church, Stewiacke, Rev. David LeBlanc officiating. A reception to follow in the church hall. Interment will take place in the Riverside Cemetery, Bridgetown in the spring. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Angola Memorial Scholarship Fund, Amnesty International Fund or charity of your choice. She was an extraordinary person who touched the lives of so many people near and far.
