The accident was caused by burning dynamite, which had been placed on the stove by Furnham Burkhardt so that it would become more pliable to be used in the blasting of stumps. The following is an authoritative version of the deplorable affair: Furnham Burkhardt was preparing to blast out some stumps on the farm, and finding the explosive too cold to do effective work, took it to the house to warm it, telling the young boy to bring it out to him in a few minutes. The boy, like all other little fellows, went about his play, forgetting entirely about the dynamite on the stove. A short time passed and the dynamite took fire, with the result as is well known. Mrs. Hook, mother of the victim, was standing near her when her clothing took fire and caught hold of Bessie, intending to put out the fire, but Bessie jerked away from her and ran out of doors, screaming as loud as she could. In a few minutes the girl's clothing was consumed. Mr. Burkhardt is heart-broken over the affair, which was purely accidental. Funeral services were held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Hook Sunday afternoon conducted by Rev. I. N. Hollingsworth of Lynn, Indiana, assisted by Rev. Mendenhall. A very large and sympathetic congregation was in attendance. The remains were taken Monday to St. Marys, the former home of the Hooks, for burial.
