Born Oct. 3, 1906, near Bittinger, she was a daughter of the late Jacob Fazenbaker and Eliza Burkholder Fazenbaker. She was also preceded in death by siblings Grover Cleve- land "Cleve" Fazenbaker, Arminta "Mintie" Bit- tinger, Elbert Vincent "Vince" Fazenbaker, Rozella "Rosie" Orendorf, Clara May Fazenbaker, Harvey Ray Fazenbaker, and Pearl Charlotte Bittinger. Bessie was the last surviving member of that family. Also preceding Bessie in death were son Marshall Edison Wilt, who died March 26, 2007, and infant son Luther McKinley Wilt, who died in January 1929. Bessie was the widow of Oscar Murry Wilt, whom she married Aug. 31, 1924. Bessie and Oscar operated a farm between Jennings and Bittinger. Their lives were shaped by hard work and dedication to family. Oscar died Jan. 15, 1975. Surviving are daughters Freda and Ruby ; and nine grandchildren. Also surviving are 20 great-grandchildren; 15 great-great-grandchildren; and two great-great-great-grandchildren. Bessie was matriarch of a six-generation photo published on the front page of The Republican June 10, 2004, the only six-generation photo in the memory of that newspaper's writers. As a young teenager, Bessie worked for the family of Ollie Buckel in Bittinger. She took care of the Buckel children so that Ollie and wife Ruth were free to tend to their family store. Bessie was proud of her Fazenbaker ancestry. She made certain that her children and grandchildren knew that they descended from Hessian Revolutionary War soldier and western Maryland pioneer George Fazenbaker. She noted the success of Uncle Godfrey Fazenbaker who owned Fort Necessity in Pennsylvania, a famous landmark from the French and Indian War. Bessie wanted her descendants to appreciate the vitality and remarkable longevity of their family, noting, for example, that her grandmother Jennie Fazenbaker lived to age 101 years, 6 months, and 16 days. A service was held at the Newman Funeral Home, Grantsville on Monday, June 18, with the Rev. George Plants officiating.
