(Wilt) Warnick, 86, of Laytonsville, died Thursday, May 10, 2012, at the home of her nephew, Danny Wilt and Cindy Stanton, near Bittinger. Born May 21, 1925 near Bittinger, she was the daughter of the late Oscar M. and Bessie Marie (Fazenbaker) Wilt. She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Marvin Paul Warnick, Aug. 3, 1999; and by brother, Marshall E. Wilt. From her parents, Freda inherited both a keen interest in family history and an especially strong work ethic. She skipped a grade at Bear Hill School and graduated a year early from grade school about 1937. Because of the primitive condition of rural roads near her home on Maynardier Ridge, school bus service to high school was not available, and Freda had no way to continue her education beyond grade school. Then, after a couple of years out of school, Freda moved with her parents to a farm a mile off of MD Rte 495 which enjoyed school bus service. By this fortuitous circumstance, Freda could thus resume her education by enrolling at Grantsville High School. Following her junior year, Freda heard about job opportunities in Baltimore. In the summer of 1943, she took all her savings and traveled to Baltimore together with a few girl friends. For the rest of her life, she would vividly recall the culture shock that came with her first exposure to a major city at age 18. In Baltimore, she found what she had come for, a well paying job. By working seven days a week at a factory, earning time and a half on Saturday and double time on Sunday, she earned $42 per week, which was more than the salary of Garrett County schoolteachers. Among her first purchases was a new mattress for her Mom and Dad. It was the first store-bought mattress the family ever owned. Thrilled by her new prosperity, Freda determined to stay working in Baltimore rather than return to high school. But Wartime requirements were such that she needed some sort of permission or acknowledgement from Grantsville High School. Principal Getty took a special interest in Freda. He persuaded her to return to school, and Freda graduated in the class of 1944. During her senior year, the Social Security Administration came to Grantsville High to recruit new workers for the agency headquarters at Baltimore. Freda took a test and did well enough to secure a job offer. Immediately following graduation, she left the mountains of Western Maryland yet again, this time to work for the Social Security Administration. She continued with Social Security and had a fine career at agency headquarters until she retired 34 years later in 1978. In Baltimore, she met Marvin Warnick when he was completing his service in the army stationed at Fort Meade. Marvin had grown up in Barton about 15 miles from where Freda was raised, but Freda and Marvin did not meet until fate took them both to Baltimore. They married on Aug. 31, 1946. Freda and Marvin carefully handled their incomes and traveled frequently to visit Freda's family in Western Maryland. They worked to preserve their western Maryland family heritage. Besides her home in Laytonsville, Freda's estate includes her father's farm and home between Jennings and Bittinger, and her grandfather's farm on Maynardier Ridge. Survivors include her son, Walter L. Warnick and wife, Anne, Laytonsville; one sister, Alverta Flanagan, Grantsville; two granddaughters, Ashlie C. Warnick and husband, Robert P. Frommer; Leah B. Warnick and husband, Tadd C. Wilson; and six great-grandchildren, Josephine M.A. Frommer, Thatcher W.L. Frommer, Claire E. Wilson, Carolyn E. Wilson, Gregory L. Wilson and Nathaniel R. Wilson. Friends and family will be received at the Newman Funeral Homes, P.A., 179 Miller St., Grantsville, on Sunday 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Services will be conducted in the funeral home on Monday, May 14, 2012 at 10 a.m. with the Rev.
