Description	:	Bethel LuVerne Schmidt, 95, of Waverly, Iowa, died Wednesday evening, October 19, 2011, at the Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community in Waverly of natural causes. Bethel was born on August 7, 1916, southwest of Plainfield, Butler County, Iowa, the daughter of Elwood Edward Sutcliffe and Martha Jane Smith. Bethel was born on August 7, 1916, southwest of Plainfield, Butler County, Iowa, the daughter of Elwood Edward Sutcliffe and Martha Jane Smith. She was baptized and confirmed at the First Baptist Church in Plainfield. Bethel attended country school near Plainfield and in the mid 1970's received her G.E.D. from Hawkeye Tech in Waterloo. On September 5, 1935, Bethel was united in marriage to Leonard Ernest Schmidt in Allison, Iowa, at the Butler County Fair. The couple farmed near Horton in Chickasaw County, and then farmed in rural Clarksville and in 1940, settled on the Sutcliffe family farm southwest of Plainfield. In 1963, the couple moved off the farm and made their home in Waverly. Bethel worked as a cook for Fred's Supper Value and the Waverly County Club, and also had worked at B.E. Mick's and Evelyn's Antiques. Leonard died on November 24, 2001, and Bethel continued to live in her home until she became a resident of the Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community in March of 2009. Bethel was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Waverly and a former member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Clarksville. Bethel enjoyed traveling with Leonard, especially their trips to California, and spending time at Mitchell Manor playing cards and visiting. But most of all Bethel treasured her time spent with Leonard, her sons, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Bethel is survived by her two sons and their spouses, Leonard J. (Verna) Schmidt of Waverly, Iowa, Randall (Roberta) Schmidt of Cedar Falls, Iowa; 11 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; and two great great grandchildren. Bethel was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Leonard in 2001; her daughter, Judy Kay Heine in 2008; three sisters, Gladys Schafer, Doris Klunder, Luella Klunder, and one brother, Walter J. Sutcliffe. Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 24, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Waverly, with Pastor Joyce Sandberg presiding. Burial will be in Harlington Cemetery in Waverly. Public visitation will be held on Sunday, October 23rd from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. at Funeral Home in Waverly. Memorials may be directed to the Schmidt family.
