Dales of Tilden passed away at the Madison House in Norfolk on Wednesday, May 20, 2009, after a lengthy illness. Betty was born in Orchard to Orville and Violet Garrison on December 26, 1925. She attended the Tilden Elementary School and graduated from Tilden High School in 1943 as valedictorian of her class. Following graduation, Betty worked at the Tilden Bank and went to Chicago to study voice and music with instructors at DePaul University and to work at the Bendix Corporation. While in Chicago, Betty was a regular soloist at the Kloeckner Memorial Church and she made several radio appearances. Betty then moved to Denver, CO where she was employed at the Federal Reserve Bank. On January 13, 1946, Betty was united in marriage with William K. Dales at the Methodist Church in Tilden after he returned from military service during WW II. Betty and Bill moved to Tacoma, WA where they resided until returning to Tilden in 1947. For many years, Betty gave private voice and piano lessons in her home to numerous music students in Tilden and the surrounding area. Betty, well-known for her beautiful soprano voice, sang at many funerals and weddings in the community and sang in community musical productions and the Methodist choir (serving as Choir Director for several of years). Betty was active in the Tilden Womens Club, the Legion Auxiliary, Jaycees, and the Methodist WSCS. She was an avid bridge-player, a crossword puzzle enthusiast, and voracious reader. As a member of the Tilden Public Schools board of education, Betty was instrumental in the organization of the Elkhorn Valley Schools and she served as the first president of its board of education. In later years, Betty became well-known for her hand-made greeting cards honoring hundreds of birthdays, weddings, and anniversaries and extending get-well wishes. Betty was a faithful wife (63 years), mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and member of the community. Betty was preceded in death by her mother and father and her sister Marlene. Betty is survived by her husband, William K. Dales, her son, David (Ann) Dales of Columbus, her daughter Debra Jacobs of Fishers, IN, sisters/nieces Denise (Pete) Volquardsen of Norfolk and Janine Yates of Papillion, and brother/nephew Mark Garrison of Omaha, four grand children--Brian Dales, Eric Dales, Laura (Marc) Christie, and Christian Jacobs, and great-granddaughter, Emilie Christie. Betty is also survived by nieces, Lindsey Yates and Ashley Volquardsen, and nephews, Tim (Milivia) Yates, Jeff Yates, Shaun Garrison, E. J. (Angie) Volquardsen, and grand-nieces Selma Radzivanovich and Leyla Yates (all who called Betty Grandma and who she considered to be her grandchildren).
