He died Thursday, Feb. 25, 2016, at Faith Regional Health Services in Norfolk after a brief illness. ——— William (Bill) K. Dales was born in Tilden to Charles William (Bill) Dales and Ruby Kendall. He attended Tilden Elementary School and Tilden High School through the first half of his sophomore year. He graduated from Neligh High School in 1941. After graduation from high school, he worked for Paul Corkle in the produce and feed business in Tilden until he moved to Washington State in early 1942, to work in the shipyards in support of the war effort. At the close of 1942, Bill came back to Nebraska and, in January of 1943, enlisted in the U.S. Army, taking his basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. During World War II, Bill served in an engineering unit as a heavy equipment mechanic and welder. He was based in the states, Hawaii, and on Saipan in the South Pacific. He reached the technical sergeant rank and was honorably discharged at Fort Lewis, Wash., in December of 1945, after the defeat of Japan. Bill visited briefly with his sisters, who lived in Washington State and then returned to Tilden, where he was united in marriage with Betty A. Garrison (his childhood sweetheart) on Jan. 13, 1946. After their marriage, the couple moved to Tacoma, Wash., where Bill worked at Smith’s Grocery. The following June, they moved back to Tilden, where Bill went into partnership with his father-in-law, Orville Garrison, in the operation of Garrison’s Tavern. In the 1960s, Orville retired from the partnership. Bill bought the business renaming it Westside Tavern and operated it until 1988, when he sold it and retired. Two children were born to Bill and Betty’s marriage, son, David, in Tacoma in March of 1947, and daughter, Debra, in Tilden in 1952. During his life in Tilden, Bill served as a volunteer fireman for many years. He was a member of the Commercial Club, the Jaycees, American Legion, VFW, and the Antelope Country Club and served as an officer in many of them. Bill served as a city councilman for many years and was active in the Republican Party at the county level. Bill loved to play golf, hunt and fish, garden and play bridge. He was an avid Husker football and volleyball fan, seldom missing a televised event. Bill was a loving, caring, and supportive husband, father and a uncle. Bill was preceded in death by his spouse, Betty; his mother and father; his sisters, Gene Weaver and Audre Burton. Bill is survived by his son, David (Ann) Dales of Columbus; his daughter, Debra of Fishers, Ind.; nieces, Ardis Barker of Junction City, Ore., Denise (Pete) Volquardsen of Norfolk, Janine Yates of Papillion; nephews, Robert (Madelynn) Burton of Sacramento, Calif., James (Diana) Burton of University Place, Wash., Doug Weaver of Casper, Wyo., Ray (Lonita) Weaver of Seattle, Wash., Mark Weaver of Seattle, Wash., and Mark Garrison of Columbus; four grandchildren, Brian Dales of Lincoln, Eric Dales and fiancée, April Sadler of Belton, Mo., Laura (Marc) Christie of Fishers, Ind., and Christian (Brandan) Jacobs of Noblesville, Ind.; great-granddaughter, Emilie Christie; great-grandsons, Andrew Christie and Carter Dales; grandnephews Tim Yates of Miami, Jeff Yates of Omaha, Shaun (Fawn) Garrison of Lincoln, Elton (Angela) Volquardsen of New Berlin, Wis.; grandnieces, Lindsey Yates of Omaha and Ashley (Matt) Lenser of Norfolk (all of whom were considered by Bill to be grandchildren); great-grandnieces Leyla Yates, Gabby Yates, Stella Yates, Asia Garrison and Olivia Volquardsen; and great-grandnephew, Benjamin Volquardsen. Memorials may be directed to Faith United Methodist Church of Tilden or to the family.
