April 2, 2001 - Daily Times Herald - Betty Nockels, 86, a former Carroll resident, died in Cedar Falls on March 29, 2001. A memorial service will be held in Carroll at a later date. Born in Kansas City, Mo., in 1914, she spent her early years in Griswold with her parents, Elizabeth and Ray Huckins and her three brothers and a sister, all of whom preceded her in death. Following her mother's death — when Betty was five years old —- she moved to Waukegan, Illinois, to live - with her aunt and uncle, the Charles Staleys. She later attended Hastings College in Hastings, Neb., and majored in children's literature. Employed as a talent coordinator for a national theatrical company, she traveled the South and Midwest assisting in the production of shows. Later, she worked for her brother-in-law, Leo Farner, in his variety store in Harlan and then in the Farner store in Carroll where she met her husband, Frank Nockels. The couple were married in Carroll in 1934. Frank managed and later owned Nockels Clothiers which had been started by his grandfather John in 1865. Frank retired from the family business in 1980 shortly before his death. The couple's children include four daughters and two sons: Louann and John Nockels of San Francisco, Jane (Mrs. Roger) Dagitz of Eau Claire, Wisc, Pam (Mrs. Frank) Dowie of Waterloo, Paula (Mrs. Sean) Asgarian of Las Vegas, and Tony Nockels of Camino Island, Wash. Mrs. Nockels is also survived by 11 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Another son, (Rusty) Frank B. Nockels III died in infancy. During her years in Carroll she was a member of the St. Lawrence Catholic Church, an active member of the Legion of Mary and St. Anthony Regional Hospital Auxiliary. An avid reader, she worked for the Carroll Public Library and wrote book reviews for the Daily Times Herald. In 1980, after her husband's death, she moved to Marin County, Calif., and became active in a University of California women's hiking group, the Marin County Wildlife Society and as a volunteer for the school district. In 1984 she moved to San Francisco where she resided until becoming ill in early 1999.
