Stamschror passed away in her home surrounded by her family on Sunday, May 13, 2012 after a long journey with Alzheimer's. She was born October 10, 1929 near Grandview, WA to William and Mary Nelson. Stamschror passed away in her home surrounded by her family on Sunday, May 13, 2012 after a long journey with Alzheimer's. She was born October 10, 1929 near Grandview, WA to William and Mary Nelson. She attended Waneta School for 5-1/2 years then moved to Grandview for 1-1/2 years. During WWII, Betty and her family moved to Portland, OR so that her dad could work in the shipyards to assist in the war efforts as her two brothers were serving in the armed forces. In 1944, the Nelson family moved back to Sunnyside, WA and Betty attended Sunnyside High School where she and four other Betty's became known as "The 5 Betty's", a strong friendship that lives on today. In 1951, Betty married Henry A. Stamschror. Following their marriage, Henry and Betty made their home in Sunnyside where Henry was involved in residential construction, having built over 100 homes in the area. Starting out, Henry built a home and Betty and Henry moved in until it sold. After the birth of their two oldest children, Mary Louise and Henry William, Betty said no more moving so in 1955 he built the family home on Woodin Rd. where they raised Mary and Henry "Hank", Cecilia "Chick", Paul, Betty Jo, Andy, and Jeanne. Betty was able to remain in her home until she passed. In 1964, Henry and Betty founded Mountain States Const. Co. in Sunnyside which is now in its 48th year of operations. Betty was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Sunnyside, where she and Henry joined a young couples group and established many lifetime friendships. Betty was very proud of the fact that she and Henry were part of a very close group that were instrumental in the formation of the St. Joseph Catholic School where several of their children attended elementary school. Many of the Stamschror children's friends remember summers spent in the Stamschror's backyard swimming, singing to Carole King songs, jumping on inner tubes to find worms, and just having fun. Betty's home was always open to friends and family and the tradition continued with the grandchildren and their friends. Even if you had never been there, as soon as you arrived you were welcomed with open arms and considered a friend. It's been told she raised half the kids in Sunnyside. Betty's best time of her life was when her kids were young and her home was buzzing with activity. Even after she was afflicted with Alzheimer's she would still grin from ear to ear when her home was filled with her family. In her later years, Betty enjoyed her Tuesday lunches with the "girls", monthly Bunco, and bowling at Valley Lanes. She loved to brag that she could beat the younger bowlers at the annual Mountain States family fun day. Many will remember seeing mom at the Post Office as she made her twice daily Mountain States mail run, often delivering ice cream, or homemade popcorn balls, or some other goodie along with the mail. She'll always be remembered by the Bob's Drive-In crew for her chicken sandwich ordered "plus cheese minus tomato" which they fondly called the "Betty Special". The highlight of her life that kept her going for so many years towards the end was the family Hawaii Vacation after Christmas 2004. Even though she couldn't remember the specifics she knew she had taken her family to Hawaii for a great vacation they will always cherish. Betty was preceded in death by her infant daughter Lucy Marie in 1959, her loving husband, Henry in 1989, her parents, William and Mary Nelson, her sisters Opal Slaybaugh and Donna Krauter, and her brothers, Lawrence Nelson and Delbert Nelson. Betty is survived by her seven children, Mary (Steve) Wimer of Yakima, Henry "Hank" (Pamula) Stamschror of Grandview, Cecilia "Chick" Stamschror (Rick Guttu) of Bellevue, Paul (Susan) Stamschror of Sunnyside, Betty Jo (David) Murray of Selah, Andrew (Sheila) Stamschror of Sunnyside, and Jeanne (Brently) Cooper of Hutto, Texas. Fifteen grandchildren: Samuel Wimer, Heidi Wimer, Henry P. Stamschror, Angela (Delton S.L.) Bonds, Sean (Bethany) Stamschror, Elisabeth "Liz" (Jason) Fonfara, Sarah (Aaron) Fink, Casey (Brynn) Stamschror, Andrew R. Stamschror, Emily Stamschror, Jeffrey (Kelsea) Stamschror, Adam Stamschror, Melissa Stamschror, Jessica Cooper, and Jake Cooper. Nine great-grandchildren Delton W.J. Bonds, Alivia Bonds, Amanda Stamschror, Greta Stamschror, Ava Fonfara, Zoe Fonfara, Ethan Fink, Noah Stamschror, and Maximilian Stamschror plus two on the way. Other survivors include the remaining four Betty's, Betty Borne, Betty Cooper, Betty Ware, and Betty Minnich. Three very special caregivers, Debra Fuqua, Cathleen Davis, and Hilda Garcia. The family wishes to extend a special heartfelt thank you to Lower Valley Hospice, especially Carla Bartlett and Sandra Alaniz for their loving care. Memorials in Betty's honor can be made to St. Joseph's Church for the Special Projects Fund, Lower Valley Hospice, or Alzheimer's Association. Viewing and visitation will be held Thursday, May 17, 2012 from 2-8 pm with recitation of the Holy Rosary at 6:00 pm at Smith Funeral Home in Sunnyside, WA. Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, May 18, 2012 at 1:00 pm at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Sunnyside, WA. Burial will follow at Lower Valley Memorial Gardens in Sunnyside, WA.
