Read More	Cumberland, MD – Betty Louise (Shaffer) Ullery, 91, of Cumberland, MD, passed away Saturday, July 30, 2016, at the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center. Born into a railroad family, August 16, 1924, in Cumberland, MD, Betty was the youngest of three daughters of Chester Shaffer and Emily (Cook) Shaffer. She was also preceded in death by her sisters: Nyta Keller and Mary Higgs, who frequently took her on train rides to Keyser, WV, to visit family; a daughter: Rebecca Carpenter; and was the last surviving member of her immediate family. After graduating from Fort Hill High School, Class of 1943, Betty worked as a stenographer for the B&O Railroad and on weekends, would often take the train with her girlfriends from Cumberland to Washington, DC, to explore our nation’s capital. During World War II, Betty corresponded regularly with Wallace Ullery and when he returned from Europe after the war, they dated and were married in 1946. Their daughter, Rebecca, was born in 1948, and in 1950, they built a house in Cumberland’s Johnson Heights neighborhood where they lived since. Their son, Craig, was born in 1955. Betty was an avid homemaker, dog lover, and teddy bear collector. For eight years, many beautiful floral arrangements were created at Light’s Flower Shop, which she owned and operated with her husband. Betty was an active member of Saint Paul’s Lutheran Church, and at one time, was church secretary. In later years, she and her husband enjoyed visiting family, exploring the great United States, and visiting Disney World in Florida via the auto train. Betty is survived by her husband, Wallace, with whom she would have celebrated almost 70 years of marriage; and her son and her grandson, both of California. She also leaves behind her niece and husband of Cumberland, MD. A memorial service will be conducted at Saint Paul’s Lutheran Church, 15 North Smallwood Street, Cumberland, MD, on Friday, August 5, 2016, at 11:00 A.M., with Reverend Dr. Marsha Bell and Bishop Kurt Kusserow of the Western Pennsylvania Synod E.L.C.A., officiating.
