Born into a railroad family, July 23, 1922, in Romney, WV, Wally was the second youngest of eight children of Ocie Curtis Gilbert Ullery and Bertha Ella (Smoot) Ullery. He was also preceded in death by his wife: Betty Louise (Shaffer) Ullery; daughter: Rebecca “Becky” Carpenter; brothers: Blair and Eugene; and sisters: Ina Parker, Odessa "Desa" Ashenfelter, Mae Elizabeth “Tina” Campbell and Helen Ruth Eror. He is survived by his younger sister: Katherine "Katie" Abe, Wiley Ford, WV; his son: Craig; and his grandson, Ian, both of California. Wally grew up during the Great Depression and South Cumberland was his playground. In 1936, at age 13, his proficiency at marbles took him to Ocean City, NJ, to become U.S. Marble Champ. He caddied at the Country Club golf course, walking there from South Cumberland. Later, he excelled at basketball and received a scholarship to Frostburg State College. After Pearl Harbor, he entered the army and landed at Normandy shortly after D-Day. His unit was bombarded by V-1 rockets and, a few days later in France, he returned from an expedition to find a crater where his barracks had been. During the war, Wally corresponded regularly with Betty Shaffer and when he returned after the war, they dated and were married in 1946. Their daughter, Rebecca, was born in 1948, and son, Craig, in 1955. For many years, Wally was the City Clerk of Cumberland and also worked with Betty at Light’s Flower Shop which they owned & operated together. After retiring from the city, he was elected as a city councilman. He enjoyed gardening, playing golf, and was an active member of The Livingstone Church of the Brethren. Wally's love and devotion to family, friends, his church and God, was unequaled. There will be a memorial service conducted at The Livingstone Church of the Brethren, 114 N Cedar Street, Cumberland, MD, on Thursday, May 25, 2017, at 11:00a.m., with Pastors Gerald Hott and Grant Abe officiating.
