Memorial services will be held in Cherokee at a later date, as Mom generously made the decision to donate her remains for anatomical study at UNMC. Mom married Bob Morton on April 30th, 1949 at a Barber Shop in Minnesota, with her best friend and sister, Ruth Robinson and her husband Bernard by their side. My brother Dennis came along, and then some 16- odd years later, I came along. I'm Frank, by the way. They just had us two boys, but Mom & Dad had many nieces & nephews that were also very close to their hearts, far too many to list, but all know who they are. Mom lived and worked most of her life in Cherokee. She waitressed for many years at several places around town and at the age of 50 returned to school to get her LPN degree, then worked as a nurse at The Cherokee Mental Health Institute for many years until her retirement. Mom and Dad spent retirement making casino trips, doing some fishing and mostly helping us at The Gasthaus. Bob and Betty were the maintenance staff for many years. Dad would refer to Mom as "Ralph" when on the job. She was his diligent assistant for most tasks. Mom and Dad were also wonderful part-time caregivers to Jan and my daughter Sydney. Sydney loved her drives around the park with her grandparents. Mom's move to Onawa was mostly brought about by Syd's move to Creighton in 2009. Over the years, Mom experienced the loss of many dear friends and relatives. Her parents, Victor and Sanny Johnson; her brothers Willard, Harold and Ted Johnson; her cherished sister Ruth Robinson; her son, Dennis Morton, in 1984; and four years ago, her husband of nearly 58 years, Bob. She persevered though, choosing to live life and forge ahead. She moved to Onawa,Iowa in 2009 and made many wonderful new friends. Mom and I had a lot of fun together these past few years, making casino runs, shopping, and eating out. I'm not sure what I am going to do on my day off now, it was always "Betty Day" to me. I know though, that in the future, when I win on a penny slot machine, that she left me her good luck. She is survived by her son Frank; granddaughter Sydney; daughter-in-law, Jan; granddaughter Amy; grandchildren, Paul, Kyle and Sanny Morton of Washington State; sisters-in-law, Mary Meller, Shirley Morton & Dollie Morton; and many nieces, nephews and great grandchildren, all of whom she thought the world of.
