Chastain Surfside Beach Betty Watkins Chastain, 85, of the Ocean Pines Community, Surfside Beach, S.C., formerly of 117 Blakely Avenue, Laurens, S.C., wife of Raymond Albert Chastain, passed away Tuesday, August 25, 2009, resting peacefully at her home in Surfside Beach. Born in Pelzer, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Dewey and Lonie McDonald Watkins. She retired from 3M Co. and was a member of First United Methodist Church in Laurens. She loved to host her grandchildren at the pool behind her home in Laurens. She loved to fish and pulled a great many of them from the waters of Lake Greenwood and Santee over the years. She loved to cook. Her Italian Cream cake always kept her family coming back for seconds and thirds. In later years, she loved the embrace of her great-grandchildren and especially loved when they would sing hymns to her. Most important, she was a woman of faith who loved her family. Her departing words to each of her family members were to remind each of them how very much she loved them. Surviving, in addition to her husband, are two daughters, Linda Boyd of Conway and Nancy Bryson of Simpsonville; one sister, Virginia W. Freeman and her husband, Jule, of Columbia; four grandchildren, Reese R. Boyd, III, Teresa B. Cyganiewicz, Christopher S. Arnold, William T. Bryson; and four great-grandchildren, Catherine Cyganiewicz, Leila Boyd, Reese Boyd IV, and Ava Arnold. She was predeceased by a brother, William Dendy Watkins. Funeral services will be 4 p.m. Friday, August 28, 2009, at The Kennedy Mortuary Chapel, Laurens conducted by Rev. Bill Rogers with burial in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends at The Kennedy Mortuary from 2:30 to 4 p.m. prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, 244 West Main St., Laurens, SC 29360.
