Bump Sept 7,1926-Dec 30,2010 Bump was the Chadron city attorney for 53 years, the Dawes County attorney for 13 years, was involved in many community and regional activities and became a top officer in five statewide organizations as well as the American Bar Association. Bump was born Sept. 7, 1926 in Chadron to Leo and Anna Bump. Shortly after graduating from Chadron High School in 1944 he joined the Navy and was a navigator aboard a carrier during the remainder of World War II. Upon his discharge in 1946, he attended Chadron State College for two years before transferring to the University of Nebraska to attend Law School. He graduated in 1952 and immediately joined his father in practicing law in Chadron. Bump married Maxine Haden of Chadron on Aug. 7, 1949. She was his legal secretary for 46 years until he fully retired in 2008. They had three sons. After he had been practicing law about 18 months, Bump was appointed the Chadron city attorney in December 1953. He held that position until November 2006, giving him what is believe to be the longest tenure as a city attorney in the state's history. He also was the county attorney 1958-1970. Bump was deeply involved in legal profession leadership. He was president of both the Western Nebraska Bar Association and the Nebraska County Attorneys Association before serving as president of the Nebraska State Bar Association 1990-91. He also was chairman of the Nebraska State Bar Association's House of Delegates 1977-85 and 2000-04, was on the state association's executive council 1981-2002 and was the General Practice Section vice chairman 1999-2000 and chairman 2000-04. He was a U.S. commissioner 1962-70. In addition, he was active in numerous American Bar Association committees. For example, he was a member of the House of Delegates 1988-2002, was one of three Nebraska delegates at the national convention 1993-2002 and represented several Midwestern states on the Board of Governors 2004-07. Bump was both a national and an international director of the Jaycees, was the state vice president 1956-57 and was inducted into the Nebraska Jaycees Hall of Fame in 1998. In addition, he was orator of the Grand Lodge of Masons of Nebraska five years, deputy grand master 1982-83 and grand master the following year. He was president of the Nebraska Masonic Foundation 1984-90. He also was deeply involved in Boy Scouts when his sons were scouts. He was the Wyo-Braska Area Council chairman 1956-70 and a member of the council's board of directors 1965-73. He received the Silver Beaver Distinguished Service Award, one of the highest honors accorded a Boy Scout volunteer, in 1972. All three sons became Eagle Scouts. Bump did not charge for his work when he drew the articles of incorporation for the Chadron State Foundation, Chadron Community Hospital and the Dawes County Agricultural Society. He was the secretary throughout his 23-year tenure on the Chadron State Foundation's board of directors, served as the legal counsel for the college for about 30 years and was presented CSC's Distinguished Service Award in 1998. He also was the legal counsel for the hospital's board of directors for 20 years. For 46 years, Bump had perfect attendance at Chadron Rotary Club meetings until missing the last three meetings in December. He was Rotary's district governor (most of Nebraska) 1995-96. He also was a life member of the American Legion and VFW and was presented the Chadron Chamber of Commerce's Key Man Award in 2006. Because of his long association with the Museum of the Fur Trade near Chadron and his help in obtaining significant contributions during the expansion a few years ago, one of the wings in the addition are named for Bevin and Maxine Bump. Survivors besides his wife include their sons. They are Bruce and his wife Brenda of Chadron, Bryce and his wife Lynelle of Elkhorn and Brett of Rapid City, S.D. Others include five grandsons, two great-grandchildren and his sister, Phyllis Brown of North Platte. Funeral Service, Wednesday January 5, 2011, 1:30 PM at Chamberlain Chapel Burial wil be at Greenwood Cemetery.
