Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Zion Lutheran Church in Albion. The Rev. Larry Sydow will officiate. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Albion with military rites conducted by the American Legion Post 162 and VFW Post 736 of Albion. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Levander Funeral Home in Albion with a 7:30 p.m. prayer service. Mr. Berney was born July 18, 1937, in Omaha to Irvin and Marie (Wichman) Berney. He was baptized and confirmed in the Baptist faith and then later at the Zion Lutheran Church in Albion. He attended Albion Public Schools. He entered the U.S. Navy on Jan. 11, 1955, and due to illness, received a medical discharge Feb. 23, 1955. He married Shirley Johnson Oct. 10, 1964, at Salem Lutheran Church in rural St. Edward. They lived all of their married life in Albion where he worked with Cornhusker Power. He retired in 1999, but continued to work part-time reading meters for Cornhusker. He also worked part-time as a security officer at the Ag-Park in Columbus and drove a truck for Helena. He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Albion, the American Legion Post 162 in Albion, and was a volunteer firefighter and EMT. He taught EMT, CPR, and first aid classes. He was a coach for Special Olympics, was a Webelos Scout leader and served on the planning committee for the City of Albion. Survivors include his wife; two daughters and a son-in-law, Anna and Lee Roberts of Sharon, Tenn. and Amber Berney of Albion; three grandchildren; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Jerry and Shirley of Norfolk, and Danny and Joan of Albion; and four sisters and three brothers-in-law, Donna and Gene Westenfeld of Cordell, Ga., Patsy and Jerome Gasper of St. Edward, Terry and Dave Thompson of Newman Grove, and Marla Berney of Tilden.
