Bjorn Walterson was born September 10, 1850 at Meidavollum in Iceland to parents Sigvaldi Bjornsson and Valgerdur Bjornsdottir. Bjorn's father died when he was eight years old and his mother's brother, Joseph Bjornsson, raised him until he was 14 years old, when he began to support himself. At the age of 21, he married Kristin Thorsteinsdottir of Nyjabae at Fjollum. They resided in Iceland until 1874, when they emigrated to Canada. Their first home was at Kinmount, Ontario. After a year there, they moved to Markland in Nova Scotia. It was there that Bjorn learned English from the Scottish farmers for whom he worked. After six and a half years, the couple moved from Nova Scotia to Winnipeg, Manitoba. There, they heard of available land in Argyle Municipality and settled on homestead SW 22-6-13 on April 9, 1882. Later, he acquired another quarter section adjacent to his own (pre-emption), which turned out to be one of the best farms in Argyle. Bjorn and Kristin's first home in Argyle was a sod hut. Bjorn worked hard and was soon able to build a better home. He was active in community life. A meeting on New Year's Day in 1884 was held at Bjorn and Kristin's home to form a Lutheran congregation. The result was that 36 members agreed to form the first congregation and thus be charter members. A church was later built across the road from his farm, the church being Frikirkja, at Bru. Bjorn and Kristin had three children: a son Hannes died in his teens, a daughter who died as an infant, and a daughter, Valgerdur Malfridur (Vala), who survived her parents. Bjorn and Kristin retired shortly after Vala's marriage in 1907 to Lyndal Josafat Hallgrimson and spent their winters in Winnipeg with Vala and Lindal, and the summers with Thorsteinn Hallgrimson in Argyle. When Bjorn retired, he owned a section of land, debt-free. Kristin died February 1913, and Bjorn passed away in 1932. Both these pioneers were buried in Bru Cemetery. Bjorn Walterson had a brother Joseph Walter of North Dakota and two step-brothers, Joe Walterson and Paul Anderson, both of Argyle, and one step-sister, Caroline Johaneson of Argyle district.
