She came here in an early day and had seen many improvements made which were undreamed of at the time of her arrival here. She had been a suffer for years. Mrs. Blanche Demmer was born in Prussia near Cologne on the Rhine, March 16, 1853. When just a child her parents came to America settling in Illinois. At a very early age she was left an orphan. Thus deprived of father and mother there remained years of hardship to endure. February 15, 1865 she was married to John Demmer also a native of Germany. First their home was in Illinois near Peru but after four years they came to Iowa where they resided until the end. Those were days when Altoona was far differ- ent from now and the present op- portunities were scarcely dreamed about. To this union were born four children, all of whom still live. Mrs. Demmer was married to a brother of her husband, Peter Demmer in 1888 who died May 29, 1896. For five years the de- ceased has been a sufferer. She submitted to operations and treat- ments but to no permanent avail. As years passed the pain increased until it was almost unendurable. The last few months seemed like years because of the lack of bodily peace. She begged for relief but it came for only the moment. Her four girls, Mrs. Frances Isemin- ger, Mrs. Anna White, Mrs. Hattie Renaud, and Mrs. Nellie Plummer all of whom live close, cared for their mother lovingly and constantly. They counted it a joy to help her who once cared for them. She was patient but the lives of her devoted children helped her to endure what other- wise would have been impossible. The deceased was always appre- ciative of things done, words spoken and gifts given. School children and older ones brot her flowers, visits were made and little tokens were sent, for which she never failed to express her gratitude. Her only sister Mrs. John Pittstick preceded her some fourteen months into the portals of death. She also leaves five living grandchildren, one deceased and one great-grandchild all of whom she loved dearly and they in turn loved her. Her four children mourn the separation from their mother but rejoice in the hope of a reunion on the other side. She was a devoted member of the Church of Christ. She was not ashamed of Him into whose divine presence she went when on Sunday June 28 at the age of 71 years 3 months and 12 days she closed her eyes forever on this earth. The funeral services were con- ducted from the Church of Christ Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock conducted by Rev. Geo. E. Purdy of Bloomfield, a former pastor, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Altoona cemetery to await the resurrection morn.
