She was born May 11, 1896 at Portsmouth, Iowa, the daughter of Ellen (Foley) Monahan and John Richard Monahan. On February 3, 1920, she married Joseph Skalla at Portsmouth, Iowa. Mrs. Skalla is survived by her husband, Joseph; seven children: Evelyn (Mrs. Fred Copeland), Los Angeles, California; Gerald Skalla, Running Springs, California; Kathleen (Mrs. Tom Cramer), Omaha, Nebraska; Philip Skalla, Compton, California; Eugene Skalla, Fullerton, California; Mary Ann (Mrs. Robert Castongia), Bellflower, California; and Raymond Skalla, Fullerton, California; 33 grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Also surviving are four sisters: Angela Monahan, Seattle, Washington; Mrs. Eva Weygint, Lincoln, Nebraska; Mrs. Helen Rosenthal, Lynwood, California; and Mrs. Pauline Wegener, Omaha, Nebraska; and two brothers: Leo Monahan of Harlan, Iowa, and Miles Monahan, Council Bluffs, Iowa. Preceding her in death were her parents; one sister, Mary Berdine; and three brothers, Edmund Francis Monahan, James Clement Monahan and John Roy Monahan. Mrs. Skalla was a member of St. Mary's Church, Portsmouth, and belonged to the Catholic Daughters of America and the Rosary Society in California. Funeral services were Monday morning, October 23, 1967, at St. Mary's Church, with the Rt. Rev. Msgr. Michael Schwarte officiating. Pallbearers were Joe Leinen, Henry Heller, Frank Pursell, Bud Skalla, Pete Jurschak and Nick Schechinger. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery, Portsmouth.
