He was a resident of Council Bluffs for the past thirty years. A veteran of World War I, he belonged to Post No. 1 American Legion in Omaha. Mr. Monahan was a member of the Holy Family Parish of Council Bluffs and the Holy Name Society. He was born in Chatsworth, Illinois, August 31, 1889, the fourth child in a family of eleven born to the late John Richard and Ellen (Foley) Monahan. At three years of age, he moved with his family to Portsmouth, Iowa, where they settled on a farm north of town. He received his early education at Portsmouth where he attended parochial and country schools. For several winters after his schooling he taught and continued to farm. He entered military service in July 1918. His marriage to Clara M. Baxter of Portsmouth took place September 9, 1918 at Bryan, Texas. Five children were born to this union. After the service he continued farming in Harrison County, Iowa, later moving to Pottawattamie County, Iowa. Surviving are his widow, Clara M. and five daughters, Mrs. Patricia Vanderdrift of Boston, Massachusetts; Mrs. Margaret Pracht of Los Angeles, California; Mrs. Pauline Brandenburg of Washington, D. C.; Mrs. Mary Ann Briggs of Omaha, Nebraska; and Mrs. Joan Hurley of Omaha, Nebraska; three brothers, Leo of Harlan, Iowa; Roy of Omaha, Nebraska; and Miles of Omaha, Nebraska, and five sisters, Angela of Los Angeles, California; Mrs. Joseph (Blanche) Skalla of Los Angeles, California; Mrs. Joseph (Helen) Rosenthal of Los Angeles, California; Mrs. Frank (Eva) Weygint of Lincoln, Nebraska; and Mrs. Henry (Pauline) Wegener of Omaha, Nebraska also survive him. There are eleven grandchildren. Services were held in Council Bluffs with burial in St. Mary's Cemetery in Portsmouth. From The Harlan Tribune (Harlan, Iowa) – Friday 14 Mar 1958
