Mr. Heitschmidt was born June 29, 1930, at the Ellsworth hospital to Charles J. and Nora Soeken Heitschmidt. He was a 1948 graduate of Holyrood Rural High School , a 1953 graduate of Kansas State University with a degree in agriculture and a 1962 graduate of Sterling College with a degree in elementary education. Mr. Heitschmidt was born June 29, 1930, at the Ellsworth hospital to Charles J. and Nora Soeken Heitschmidt. He was a 1948 graduate of Holyrood Rural High School , a 1953 graduate of Kansas State University with a degree in agriculture and a 1962 graduate of Sterling College with a degree in elementary education. At Kansas State, he was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity. On Aug. 19, 1951, he married Lavel Ann Russell at the St. Peter Lutheran Church, Holyrood. Mr. Heitschmidt was commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force and served from 1953-55 during the Korean War. He served from 1957-77 as a liaison officer for the Air Force Academy, retiring as a lieutenant colonel. He was a member of American Legion Post 200. He was an elementary and junior high school teacher at Claflin from 1957-63. In 1963-64, he was the assistant office manager for the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service in Reno County before coming to Ellsworth County, where he served as the ASCS executive director for 26 years, 1964-1990. He served as president of District 5 of ASCS County Office Employees. In November 1999, he was elected to the Ellsworth County Commission, representing District 1. He was past president of the Kansas County Commissioners Association (1994), vice president of the Kansas Association of Counties, past president of both K-WORC (1995) and K-CAMP (1998) and a member of the Kansas Association of Counties. Since birth, he was a member of the St. Peter Lutheran Church, Holyrood, and past president of the congregation. He was a member of the Lutheran Layman¹s League and a Lamplighter for Aid Association for Lutherans. He served as past president of the Hoisington Lutheran Hospital and was a board member for 20 years. He was a sales representative for Double H Auction and Realty. He also was a member of the Ellsworth County Catbakers and the Holyrood Lions Club. Survivors include his wife, Lavel; two sons, Tony and wife Robyn of Holyrood, and Todd and wife Rae of Leoti; a daughter, Conetta and husband Mark Suchon of Seabrook, Texas; a sister, Caroline Pflughoeft of Claflin; five grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren. The funeral was Monday at the St. Peter Lutheran Church. Burial was in the church cemetery. Memorials may be sent to the St. Peter Lutheran Church, or the Center for Basic Cancer Research at Kansas State University in care of Parsons Funeral Home, Ellsworth.
