Born in Anderson County, he was the son of the late Claude Eugene and Allie Mae Cole Cromer. He was a retired mechanic and engine specialist. Gene was a well-known and well-respected race car driver in the 1960's and early 70's. He was the owner and driver of The Moonlighter, a 1941 Willys. He was a member of Oakwood Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife of 70 years, Ruth Garrett Cromer; two daughters, Robin Jean Cromer Gamble (David) and Julie Cromer Graves (Larry); three grandchildren, David Caleb Gamble, Halee Gamble Evans (Jonathan), and Geoffry Darrell Graves; two great-grandchildren, Carter Thompson Evans and Gamble Cromer Evans; brother, Lamar Cromer; and two sisters, Ann Blair and Jill Helgeson (Bruce). In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Elaine Chisman. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, July 16, at Sullivan-King Mortuary Chapel conducted by Pastor Michael Jones. Burial will follow at New Prospect Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Thursday and 1 until 2 p.m. Friday at the mortuary. The family is at the residence.
