MASKELL - Funeral services for Mrs. Marcus Nelson, 98, Dixon county pioneer who died at her home in Maskell, Nebraska May 30, 1949, were held from Zion Lutheran church here Friday at 2 o'clock. Mrs. Maurice Lund, Mrs. Burdette Anfinson and Mrs. Glennard Bauman sang "Den Himmelake Hoile" in Norwegian and "Jesus Calls". Burial was made in the Lime Creek Cemetery under direction of the Don O. Mohr and Son Mortuary of Ponca. Pallbearers, all grandsons, were: Roy Johnson, Elwin, Raymond, Carl, Darcelip and Harry Nelson. Bolette Nelson, daughter of Johann and Maren Johnson was born in Sitskogen, Norway, March 4th, 1851. In May 1869 she with a number of other immigrants, left Norway for the United States and landed at Castle Garden, N.Y. After a short stay in New York, she and her twin sister and others moved westward to Red Wing, Goodhue County, Minnesota, and a short time later to Florence in Nebraska. She was united in marriage in 1870 to Marcus Nelson. In the fall of 1871 they moved to a homestead in Dixon County, five miles south of Maskell. This farm now is the home of her youngest son, Melvin Nelson. Together with her husband and family she resided on this farm for fourty-two years, moving to the present home in Maskell in 1913 where she resided until her death. Having married a widower with five small children Mrs. Nelson faced a difficult time in the new country. She was often left alone while her husband worked along the river gathering wood for fuel to make extra income. Often she had to find red root for fuel and frequently she and the children had to do the chores. She was babtized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church in Norway. She was a charter member of the Lime Creek Lutheran Church organized in 1871, which was later reorganized, as the Zion Lutheran Church of Maskell, Nebraska. She thus held membership in the same church for a period of 76 years. She was also a charter member of the Ladies Aid Society of her church. She is survived by nine children, six sons, Elmer Nelson of Maskell, Alfred, Minor, and Melvin of Newcastle, Ole G. Nelson of Wayne and Albert Nelson of Long Beach, California; three daughters, Mrs. Mattie Mallory of Sioux City, Iowa, Mrs. Amelia Johnson of Maskell, and Mrs. Ida Packwood of Newcastle; and one step-daughter, Mrs. Lena Tvedt of Maskell. She was preceded in death by her husband, two sons, George and Julius and a daughter which died in infancy. She was also preceded in death by four step-children, Nels Nelson, Mrs. Olive Severson, Mrs. Mary Baerresen and Mrs. Johanna Bottolfson.
