Marcus Nelson Graverholt resident of Dixon County, Nebraska since 1871 passed away March 28, 1923, at the ripe old age of 85 years at his home in Maskell. He was one of the early pioneers in this territory, homesteading land five miles south of Maskell. Many were the hardships that had to be gone through in those days, living in dugouts far to market battling with the elements, blizzards and droughts so prevalent in the early days. Marcus Nelson Graverholt resident of Dixon County, Nebraska since 1871 passed away March 28, 1923, at the ripe old age of 85 years at his home in Maskell. He was one of the early pioneers in this territory, homesteading land five miles south of Maskell. Many were the hardships that had to be gone through in those days, living in dugouts far to market battling with the elements, blizzards and droughts so prevalent in the early days. Grasshoppers stripping everything and so on. Through the many hardships the sturdy pioneers were yet able to raise large families, build up the country, from a wild untraversed land to a land of homes, schools and churches where civilization thrives and blossoms, which we are now privileged to enjoy. May the faith and the perseverance that were theirs, be ours to carry on the work so well begun. Mr. Graverholt was born Graverholt in Sitskogen, Holands parish, Norway, December 25, 1837. He married Inger Gimderson Haga in 1858. To this union were born Nelson, deceased. Mrs. Olive Severson, Mrs. Lena Tvedt, Mrs. Gunda Barreson, deceased, and Mrs. Johannah Bottolfson. Mrs. Graverholt died in 1869. He and children emigrated to America in 1869 to Goodhue County, Minn., and later moved to Florence, Nebraska a suburb of Omaha. At Omaha he was united in marriage to Boletta Johnson in 1870. To this union were born George, Elmer, Julius, Alfred, Minor, Ole, Mrs. Mattie Mallory, Mrs. Tilda Amelia Johnson, Mrs. Ida Packwood, Mathilda deceased, and Melvin. These fourteen children together with sixty grandchildren and his widow are left to mourn his departure.
