Daughter of Floyd Leslie Hartman and Zola Beatrice Barton OBITUARY THE CHARITON HERALD-PATRIOT Chariton, Iowa Thursday, August 24, 2000 HELLYER Bonita R. Hellyer, daughter of Floyd and Zola (Barton) Hartman, was born Jan. 23, 1923 in Clay County, Iowa. She passed away Aug. 16, 2000 at the Mahaska County Hospital in Oskaloosa at the age of 77. Bonita and her family lived in Sewal and Promise City when she was a young girl. She graduated from Corydon High School and later lived in Williamson. She was united in marriage to Laurel "Tex" Hellyer April 2, 1941. Their family moved to Chariton in the late 1960's and Bonita had made her home in Oskaloosa for the past six years. Bonita was a dedicated nurse. She worked in the health care industry for most of her life. In 1995, she retired from the Chariton Nursing and Rehab Center. Bonita loved tending to her flower garden and was an avid reader. She was a member of the Chariton First Baptist Church and attended the Bethel Baptist Church since moving to Oskaloosa. She enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren whenever possible. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Laurel in 1997; two infant children, Rex Dean and Carol Louise; and son, Terry Hellyer. Bonita is survived by her son, Chris Hellyer and wife Darcy of West Des Moines; daughter, Laurie and husband Wade Schelker of Oskaloosa; and daughter Karen and husband Larry Irvin of Poncha Springs, Colo. She is also survived by grandchildren, Travis Hellyer of San Francisco, Calif., Natalie Zaberski and Matthew Irvin, both of Salida, Colo., and Taylor and Sierra Schelker of Oskaloosa; two great-grandchildren; her sister, Gloria Becker of Corydon and many good friends and neighbors. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 19, 2000, at the Fielding Funeral Home with Pastor Paul Olson and Pastor Bruce Thompson officiating. Burial was in the New York Cemetery near Millerton. Serving as bearers were Everett Beals, Matt Schelker, Bill Blake, Joe Patch, Terry Van Rheenen and Tom Jessip.
