He passed away on June 10, 1997, at the age of 78. Laurel graduated from Sewal High School with the class of 1936. He enjoyed playing horseshoes and won many prizes over the years. He passed away on June 10, 1997, at the age of 78. Laurel graduated from Sewal High School with the class of 1936. He enjoyed playing horseshoes and won many prizes over the years. Laurel also played guitar in his younger years and enjoyed a good game of pool. He was diagnosed with a terminal illness only three weeks ago. He accepted Christ while in the hospital. Laurel was preceded in death by his parents, sons, Rex and Terry, daughter, Carol, and sister, Ruby. He leaves to mourn his wife, Bonita of Oskaloosa, daughters, Karen Irvin and husband Larry of Poncha Springs, Colo. and Laurie Schelker and husband Wade of Oskaloosa; son, Christopher and wife Darcy of Des Moines; grandchildren, Travis Hellyer of St. Louise, Mo., Natalie Zaberski and Matthew Irvin, both of Salida, Colo., and Taylor and Sierra Schelker of Oskaloosa; two great-grandchildren and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, June 13, 1997, at the Fielding Funeral Home in Chariton. Pastors Paul Olson and Bruce Thompson officiated. Burial was in the New York Cemetery. Kermit Wood, Everett Beals, Terry Van Rheenen, Bill Blake, Jack Young and Leland Shelton served as bearers.
