Brewster Alan Rust was born Dec. 6, 1920, at Chapin, Iowa, a son of George Washington and Elizabeth Marie (Randolph) Rust. He graduated from Chapin High School. In January 1942, Bruce enlisted in the Army Air Corps and served with the 8th Air Force in Europe. Upon discharge from the Air Corps he returned to Sheffield where he has lived since. On July 28, 1946, Brewster was united in marriage with Norma Timmerman at the Evangelical United Brethren Church in Sheffield. To this union four children were born: Shari, Shelley, Cynthia and Randy. Bruce was co-owner of the Timmerman & Rust Ford dealership in Sheffield with his father-in-law. He also was a carpenter and bricklayer who took great pride in constructing many area homes and commercial buildings, including his own home. He was active in the EUB and later the First United Methodist Church where he served as Sunday School teacher and superintendent at the EUB and sang in the choir. Active in the community he served 44 years on the Sheffield Fire Department and served on the city council and the planning and zoning board. Bruce was also active in the Sheffield Legion Post No. 277 and the 8th Air Force Historical Society. Brewster was known for his world class popcorn balls and making the best date Christmas cookies. He enjoyed woodworking, fishing, golfing and model airplanes, he also spent many hours reading mysteries and westerns and watching sports. His grandchildren were the apple of his eye and spending time with them was very special, playing cards with them was his favorite past time. Survivors include his wife of 65 years: Norma Rust; daughters: Shelley McCutcheon, Sheffield; Cynthia (Dana) Ditzenberger, Marion; son: Randy (Deborah) Rust,Grimes; five grandchildren: Mike McCutcheon, Kate (John) Andersen, Brianna Ditzenberger, Alex Ditzenberger and Connor Rust and two step-grandchildren: Shannon DeHaan and Ryan DeHaan; sister: Gloria (James) Boggess, Dallas, Texas; sister-in-law: Lorraine Rust, Sheffield, many nieces, nephews and cousins. He is preceded in death by his parents; daughter Shari Rust-Butterworth, twin brother: Douglas; sister Delphine Boehlje and husband Walter; sister-in-law Ann and her husband Adam, their son Tim and brothers-in-law: Skip Adrian and Jim Boggess.
