Description	:	Brian Marshall Gifford, 68, of Elkader, Iowa died peacefully on February 17, 2009 at the Guttenberg Care Center following complications from a long battle with normal pressure hydrocephalus. Brian was born on July 21, 1940 in Elkport, Iowa, son of Glenn and Marjorie (Eppens) Gifford. He graduated from Elkader High School and earned an undergraduate degree from the University of Dubuque, a master's degree from the University of Northern Iowa and a PhD from the University of Missouri. Brian was born on July 21, 1940 in Elkport, Iowa, son of Glenn and Marjorie (Eppens) Gifford. He graduated from Elkader High School and earned an undergraduate degree from the University of Dubuque, a master's degree from the University of Northern Iowa and a PhD from the University of Missouri. On July 1, 1967, Brian married Florence (Lomax) Gifford of Galena, Illinois. They had three sons, Tom, Marshall and Andrew. After working as Co-Director of Institutional Research and Director of Student Residences at Drake University, Brian returned home to Elkader to take over his father's insurance agency, Gifford Insurance, and raise his family. Brian enjoyed being active in the community serving local organizations such as the Central Community Hospital Foundation, Peace Church Council, Elkader Economic Development Committee, Motor Mill Foundation, Lion's Club, Masonic Lodge, and Boy Scouts of America. Brian was a kind-hearted, gentle man who loved spending time with his family and friends. As a young man, he enjoyed scouting, canoeing, hunting and fishing and went on to play basketball at the University of Dubuque. As an adult, he had a wide range of interests including traveling throughout the world with his wife, gardening, antiquing for The Buttery and reading. He especially enjoyed teaching and encouraging his children and grandchildren in their many activities. He will be deeply missed and always remembered. He is survived by his loving wife, Florence, their three sons Tom (Michelle) Gifford, Elkader, Marshall (Tari) Gifford, Saint Paul and Andrew (Rachel) Gifford, Saint Paul as well as nine grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Nancy; his father-in-law, William Lomax; mother-in-law, Alice Lomax, and sister-in-law, Mary Hale Lomax. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Central Community Hospital Foundation or the Elkader Boy Scouts of America.
