Brian Orlan Torberson was born November 6, 1950 in Canton, SD, to Clifford and Bernice (Chaon) Torberson. He attended Lantaff Country School and graduated from Canton High School in 1969. He served in Army National Guard and in the U.S. Army. He was a volunteer for the Canton Ambulance Association, which led him to attend McKennan Hospital Respiratory Therapy School in Sioux Falls, SD. Brian and Jeanne Servold eloped to Hot Springs, SD, where they were married on November 26, 1971. They lived in Chamberlain, SD, where Brian worked as the Respiratory Therapy Department Head for Mid-Dakota Hospital for 13 years, with a special interest in the Native American population in the surrounding area. They moved to Pukwana, SD in 1980 and lived in a home that Brian built. He also operated a sporting goods business out of his basement for several years. He served two terms as mayor while living in Pukwana. Brian attended the Police Training Academy in Pierre and later volunteered as an officer in Alexandria, SD. In 1996 Brian became a professional truck driver, and later taught his wife to drive truck. They drove as a team for ten years, until he died on September 4, 2007 at the age of 56. They have lived on an acreage near Canton since 2000. Brian was a former member of Grand Valley Lutheran Church, Bethany Reformed Church, and Free Lutheran Church in Puckwana and currently a member of Redeemer Free Lutheran Church in Canton. Brian was a history buff and enjoyed participating in historical reenactments. He and his family wore out several boats on the Missouri River near Chamberlain. He loved the outdoors and mountain life, which included hunting, fishing, cutting wood, horses, and 4-H activites with their children. He also enjoyed gardening, canning, and processing of their own wild game. Grateful for having shared his life are: his wife, Jeanne; son, Jeremiah (Cami) Torberson of Dallas, TX; daughter, Jessie Torberson of Sioux Falls; two granddaughters, Harley and Bergen of Dallas, TX; his mother Bernice Torberson of Canton; sister-in-law, Alberta "Birdie" Torberson of Houston, TX, sister Suzanne (Larry) King of Sioux Falls, and Carroll (Joyce) Torberson of Mitchell, SD. He was preceded in death by his brother, Leonard, his father, Clifford, and special cousin, Merlyn Oliver.
