Read More	BRIDGET DELIA (CREHAN) KLATKA Holyoke Enterprise, Holyoke, Colorado, July 3, 2008 Bridget Crehan Klatka (who preferred to be known as Delia Klatka) was born March 8, 1919, the ninth of 10 children to Martin and Margaret Crehan in Ballymakea, County Clare, Ireland. She died June 25, 2008 in Holyoke. She was baptized in the Roman Catholic Church on the day she was born and confirmed in the same church at age 13. She received her primary and secondary education in parochial schools in Ireland. She entered nurses training in April 1939 at St. Andrew's Hospital, Dollis Hill, London, England, graduated as a Registered Nurse (RN) in 1943 and took post-graduate courses in midwifery, consumption and diseases of the chest. She lived and worked in London all through World War II, and had many stories to tell of life during the bombing of London: the blackouts, rationing, carrying gas masks at all times, the dropping of the doodlebugs and rockets, moving patients to basements each night during the Blitz, taking refuge in the subways - very exciting times. She met her future husband Louis Klatka, an American G.I. soon after D-day. They were married in Southampton, England, in June 1945. She came to the U.S. at the end of 1946, traveling by ship to New York in the company of about 300 other G.I. brides and babies, then traveling by train to Alliance, Nebraska, where her in-laws lived. In January of 1947, they moved to Holyoke where she lived the rest of her life. In February of 1949 Delia was hired by the East Phillips County Hospital as an R.N. This was during the baby boom days after the war and the hospital was very busy. She helped bring many local "boomers' into the world and they held a special place in her heart. She continued to work at the local hospital until the early 1990s when she suffered a heart attack, underwent open heart surgery and had four bypasses. She was a great advocate of the cardiac rehab program started in Holyoke by Dr. Myrlen Chesnut and Arlene Harms, and credited that program with the extra years she was granted. She became an American citizen in 1955 and voted in every election after that as a devoted Democrat. She was the last living member of her family. She was preceded in death by her husband Lou, her parents, seven brothers and two sisters. Delia is survived by her children Tony Klatka, Denver and Sylvia Parker, Laramie, Wyoming; grandchildren Tony Parker, Lafayette, Devon Parker, Loveland and Patrick Rubin Gravois, New Orleans, Louisiana; and great grandson Jackson Parker, Lafayette. Memorial contributions may be made to Melissa Memorial Hospital Foundation for Cardiac Rehab Program, 1001 E. Johnson, Holyoke, CO 90734. Rosary was Friday, June 27 at St. Patrick's Church in Holyoke. Mass of the Christian Burial was Saturday, June 28 at Holyoke Memorial Park, with Father William Jungmann officiating. Gerk Funeral Home is entrusted with the arrangements.
