December 21: This entire community was saddened the last of the week when the report came from Omaha that Bruce Abel, one of the most popular young men of the community, had passed away at the Clarkson hospital, Saturday evening. Discouraging reports had come as to his condition and yet he had so recently been so active and full of life and the doings of the community that it did not seem possible that he could be so seriously ill, and the end came as a great shock to his relatives and the entire community. A short time ago, Bruce had met with an accident while playing basketball and had his ankle injured. Later at another game the same ankle was hurt again. It became aggravated and inflamed and on the Sunday preceding he waa confined to his home although he expected to be out again in a few days. But the ankle became swollen and it was seen that infection had set in, and he grew worse. On Thursday it was decided to take him to Omaha to the Clarkson hospital whither he was accompanied by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Abel and Dr. Yates. Everything possible to medical skill was done for him but to no avail and he passed away Saturday evening. The remains were brought to Malvern Saturday night for embalming and brought to the home in Emerson Sunday morning. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at two thirty from the Presbyterian church conducted by the pastor, Rev. W. C. McClelland assisted by Rev. H. P. Morga of the Methodist church and Rev. W. J. Robinson of the Baptist church. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Honeyman, Stewart Honeyman and Mrs. Lawrence Taylor sang. Interment was made in the Emerson cemetery. The pall bearers Malvern Leader, December 22, 1921 The death of Bruce Abel created a profound sorrow in his home community of Emerson. The Tribune editor was not personally acquainted with the young man. but the splendid commendation given him by two leading, citizens of Emerson proved to us that Bruce Abel was a fine young man and gave promise of a manhood that would honor his home community and bring joy to bis parents. A slight wound, which in the young man's rugged health condition top gave little heed to, developed info blood poisoning and the skill of specialists could not combat the ease successfully. The now bereaved parents have the sympathy of everyone who knew the splendid son. Bruce Armstrong Abel was the only son of Mr. and Mrs. W.W. Abel, born in Emerson on January 6, 1903 and died at the Clarkson Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska on December 17, 1921. He was a senior in Emerson, and stood high in his studies as well as being strong in athletics. At the age of 14 he entered his membership with the Presbyterian Church. All unite in the testimony that Bruce Able was a clean and upright man. His is mourned by both parents, his grandmothers, Mrs. Lou tupper and Rosetta Abel, 4 aunts, Mesdames D. S. Kenney, f. H. Oglevie, and Miss Lurland Able all of Emerson and Mrs. Arthur Merrill of Pleasantville, Nebraska. Malvern Leader, December 28, 1921
