She married Soctt Ballard and they became parents to three children: Maude (1885), James Everett (1880) and Samuel Ora (1891), all born in Iowa. After her husband's death, she remarried to Charles DeKay, also a widower. They lived in Red Oak, Iowa. Buena Vista "Vit" died in 1938 and was laid to rest in Coleridge Cemetery in Nebraska. A newspaper article about her first husband's death: Scott Ballard Found Dead. At about 10:30 this (Thursday) forenoon word came to town that Scott Ballard was lying, apparently dead, near the road side about a mile east of his place.A doctor was at once summoned and upon further inquiry it was found that Mr. Ballard had gone to the hill to shovel snow out of the road for the teams hauling corn.He tied his team and evidently fell dead of heart disease while at work as he was subject heart attacks. A newspaper report of her marriage to Charles DeKay follows: MRS. BUENA V. BALLARD TO WED CHAS. DeKAY OF RED OAK Friends of Mrs. Buena v. Ballard will be pleased to learn of her marriage to Charles DeKay of Red Oak which took place Monday evening, May 24, at the Presbyterian Manse in Denison, Iowa, Rev. F.E. Hamlin, pastor of that church officiating. Later Mr. and Mrs. DeKay returned to Charter Oak and will continue to live here until school is out, she making a home in town, to permit her grand daughters to complete the school year after their parents moved to the farm. Afterward they will take a trip west before opening their home at 410 Joy Street, Red Oak, Iowa, where they will be at home to their friends after June 20. Mrs. Ballard is well and favorably known here and her friends rejoice with her in her prospects of a home of her own. Mr DeKay is not known here but word comes from Red Oak of his good standing there and of his being a man of high ideals. We trust that they may find convenient to visit here quite frequently. The Times wishes to be numbered among those extending congratulations. A note written by her daughter at the time of her death: Memories:Mother passed away 8:15 on Sunday evening.She had been slowly slipping all day but seemed to rally towards evening.She went to sleep about eight o'clock and passed away while asleep very very peacefully.She had been failing Since last fall.At noon she asked if I was going to stay and when I answered "yes" she said, "I am glad for I feel that I might go any time."During about ten yrs of illness she was always cheerful and never complained.
