Description	:	Charles "Jack" DeKay was born in Illinois, the son of Charles and Sarah Mary (Ashby) DeKay. When Charles was young, the family moved to a farm south of Red Oak, Iowa, where he grew up. His siblings included: John, Emma, Clara, Sierra Nevada, Wilson, Lawson, Mary and Ross DeKay. In 1893, when he was 33 years old, Charles married Lorinda (Fleener) Crosthwait, in Red Oak, Iowa. Read More	Charles "Jack" DeKay was born in Illinois, the son of Charles and Sarah Mary (Ashby) DeKay. When Charles was young, the family moved to a farm south of Red Oak, Iowa, where he grew up. His siblings included: John, Emma, Clara, Sierra Nevada, Wilson, Lawson, Mary and Ross DeKay. In 1893, when he was 33 years old, Charles married Lorinda (Fleener) Crosthwait, in Red Oak, Iowa. They became parents to three sons, two who grew to adulthood. Sons were: Elmer (1893-1967), Lester (1895-1899), and Carl (1898-1977). Charles and Lorinda and Charles lived in Nebraska, where they raised their family. After youngest son, Carl's graduation from high school, Charles bought a farm back in Iowa, where he had been raised, and they moved there to farm with Carl. Charles and Lorinda lived with Carl and his wife, Lois (Mewhirter) for several years before moving to the town of Red Oak, Iowa. Even after the move to Red Oak, Charles came often to the farm to visit. He carried candy in his pockets so his little grandchildren would follow him around. He would bring his lunch, and when he ate a sandwich with ants on it, his little granddaughters screamed at him to warn him, but he told them "the ants will have to look out for themselves." Lorinda died in 1923. Charles married 2 more times after her death, to Buenavista (Vit) in 1926 and Jessie Taylor Foote. Charles died in Red Oak, Iowa in 1947. In his will, he left approximately $1000 to each of his 12 grandchildren.
