MILLER, 51, Rochester realtor and school board member. Miller was killed about 4:10 p.m. when his single-engine Piper Cherokee 180 aircraft crashed following takeoff from May airport, a private field along U.S. 35 about eight miles south of Knox. Miller had taken off to return to the Fulton county airport here, but the plane circled the field to approach the runway again and then struck the top of some trees near the end of the runway. The reason for Miller's return to the airport is not known. The Federal Aviation Agency and the National Transportation Safety Board has taken charge of the investigation to determine cause of the crash. Miller, a licensed private pilot, was flying the Cherokee owned by Fulton County Aviation. He had taken the plane to the Mays airport to complete his instrument flight test with the airport operator, Larry MAY, a licensed FAA flight examiner. May said that Miller passed the 1 1/2-hour test "with flying colors". During the flight, May added, there were no apparent problems either with the aircraft or with Miller's physical condition. Miller was pleased to have passed the difficult test and chatted with May before starting his return flight. There evidently were no witnesses to the crash. May had gone to his office after Miller's takeoff to telephone his home when he heard the sound of the crash. He rushed to the scene, then returned to call ambulance and police assistance. May also informed the Fulton County Airport of the accident. Harry WELLS, airport manager; Mike THOMPSON, Miller's flight instructor, and Les LARSON, another local pilot, immediately went to the field themselves. Miller first obtained a pilot's license in 1941 while a student at DePauw university, resuming flying about four years ago. He had over 200 hours of flying time. Long active in local civic affairs, Miller had been a trustee of Rochester community schools since 1967 and just completed a term as school board president. He also was a past president of the Rochester Chamber of Commerce and the Rochester Kiwanis club and had continued as an active member in both organizations. He had served as a member of the Fulton County Board of Public Welfare, as well. Miller was a member of the Rochester Elks and Masonic lodges, Scottish Rite of South Bend and Shrine of Fort Wayne. He was a member and elder of the First United Presbyterian church and a member of American Legion post here. A licensed real estate broker since 1955, Miller on Feb. 1 had closed his own realty office here to associate with Gottschalk Realty. He was a member and past president of the Fulton County Board of Realtors and belonged to state and national realty associations. Born May 11, 1921, in this city, he was the son of Robert R. and Erma TAYLOR MILLER. His late father was Fulton county clerk and judge of the Fulton circuit court. Miller had spent most of his life in this community, returning in 1955 from Greentown where he had operated an elevator for nine years. He was a graduate of Rochester high school and DePauw university. During World War II he served almost five years in the Pacific theatre aboard tankers and attack transports and earned the rank of lieutenant commander. In 1958, he was the Democratic candidate for state representative from this district. Surviving are three daughters, Miss Merry MILLER, Louisville, Ky.; Mrs. Douglas (Michele) JUMP, Dayton, O., and Mrs. Thomas (Cathleen) GREENE, New Castle. Last rites are incomplete, pending notification of relatives, but tentatively are set for Monday afternoon at the First United Presbyterian church with the Rev. Allen JUMP officiating. Friends may call at the Zimmerman Brothers funeral home Sunday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 4-9 p.m. The family requests that memorials other than flowers be made to a favorite charity. ----- Published in The Rochester Sentinel Monday, March 19, 1973 Burk B. Allen JUMP officiated and burial was in the family plot at the I.O.O.F. cemetery. The Zimmerman Brothers funeral home was in charge. Cause of the crash is under investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board at the Fulton county airport here, where wreckage of the plane has been taken. The normal time span before probable cause of the accident will be determined is three months, say authorities. Miller, a licensed private pilot, had just completed successfully his instrument flight test with Larry MAY, operator of the airport and a licensed flight examiner. He took off to return to Rochester, but his plane circled the field and then struck the top of some trees on the approach to the runway. A realtor here since 1955 and a member of the Rochester school board, Miller is survived by his wife, the former Ada MERRY, to whom he was married Sept. 27, 194w, at Dunkirk. Also surviving are three daughters, Miss Merry MILLER, Louisville, Ky.; Mrs. Douglas (Michele) JUMP, Dayton, O., and Mrs. Thomas (Cathleen) GREENE, New Castle.
